West Ham 1-1 Southampton: Player Ratings

West Ham 1-1 Southampton

Areola:7 Excellent save from Sulemana on 18 mins. The same player hit the bar 20 mins later which was just as well because Areola was rooted to the spot. Saved a soft direct freekick from Manning. Very good save from Stephens on 72 mins. Nothing he could do about the Saints 92nd minute equaliser.

Coufal:5 Stared in place of Aaron Wan Bissaka who was nursing an injured toe. Given a really tough time by Sulemana who was the most effective player on the pitch for the opening period of the game. Good battle between fullback and wide-man.

Todibo:6 Impressed with how he dealt with the huge Onuachu. Badly out-jumped to set up a chance Dibling should have equalised with.

Kilman:5 A very easy day at the office for the centre back who was the least busy of the defenders. For all Paul Onuachu’s size, he lacks aggression and an early industrial challenge from Kilman made the striker stay away for most of the game. Unlucky his deflected block ended up at the feet of Ugochukwu.

Emerson:7 The only Irons player to show any sort of thrust and willingness to travel with the ball in the first half. One dribble in particular was a highlight.

Ward Prowse:5 Started most West Ham attacks and had time and space as Southampton were happy to let the Hammers have the ball. Had two shots from open play. Embarrassed by Flynn Downes who dispossessed JWP in midfield and created another Saints attack.

Soler:6 Mostly anonymous in the opening 45 but kept it tidy as always. Much better in the second half as Potters team began to dominate following the early goal.

Paqueta:8 Given licence to roam. Set up Emerson and Ward Prowse with excellent passes early in the first half. Continued his excellent recent form as he pulled the strings throughout the 90 mins.

Bowen:7 Got an elbow to the face but not much else in the opening part of the game. Scored the opening goal of the game with an exquisite very Bowen like finish.

Kudus:5 Largely anonymous to begin with. Played his part in Bowen’s goal as the Hammers scored immediately after the break. Snatched at a few chances as he looked desperate to get on the scoresheet. Lacks confidence.

Fullkrug:8 Early chance following a good right foot cross from Lucas Paqueta forced Ramsdale into a save. Created the assist for Bowen as West Ham countered a Saints corner. Wonderful flick to Kudus in the second half should have resulted in a better attack. Created a wonderful chance for Guilherme shortly afterwards.

West Ham 1-1 Southampton: Fullkrug tests Ramsdale early in the game

Substitutes

Guilherme:6 Replaced Kudus on 75 mins. Forced Ramsdale into a save almost immediately after coming on.

Scarles:5 Replaced Emerson on 79 mins

Soucek: On for the excellent Fullkrug as part of a double substitution.

Ferguson: 85th min change for Bowen

Mavropanos: Replaced James Ward Prowse

Generously marked across the whole team.

  • M B says:

It’s easy to blame the Manager. Potter isn’t the issue. We have a squad full of players who are either too slow, well past their best, just not as good as they are made out to be or simply don’t want to be here.

The squad needs a serious overhaul, but with the current owner that’s not going to happen. Moyes allowed the squad to age and I fear we will go down before the change needed will happen. The league table and form guides don’t lie. We are 16/20 in the league and 18/20 on form with 1 pt more than Southampton. We are one of the worst teams in the league and until the owner realises this nothing is going to change.

    • Sheik Yerbouti says:

Potter is part of the issue. He sets the team. It’s his tactics which are play the ball sideways then back to the goalkeeper.
I really thought it would be different today but no.It see. to me that Potter only knows one way to play.
I hate to say it but we really are a boring team to watch.

      • B says:

“Potter only knows one way to play.”

That is simply not the case. You don’t get to be a Premiership manager without knowing a shed-load more about football tactics than your average punter.
Okay, you may not like the product he’s moulded, that’s your perogative, but that’s no reason for that ‘hot-take’.

    • Essexiron42 says:

Sorry MB Potter has to take responsibility for his ridiculous decisions week in week out as he sets up the team, formation and tactics and he got it badly wrong yet again today. We are one of the worst teams in the Premiership and have regressed since he took over winning only 3 of his first 13 games and averaging only 1 goal per game. Despite playing officially the worst teams in PL history today we were dreadful and attacking play is almost non existent under Potter’s tactics. Why on earth did he take off our 3 attackers when we were leading 1-0 and revert to his usual 5 at the back against a team who have only got 10 points before today and have already been relegated? Awful decision which invited pressure and we go and concede in injury time dropping 2 more points against a team who hadn’t won since the beginning of February. Potter is so bloody negative and will not change his approach despite the poor results, he still maintains we do not need a major rebuild of the squad. Perhaps journalists and supporters should remind him how lucky we are there are 3 teams worse than us this season, and as you point out on current form we are 18/20. He is not the answer.

    • Morty says:

Not a fan of the owners, but they would rightly say we needed a squad overhaul last year and they paid out £150m to facilitate that.

      • B says:

I believe West Hams financial spend on transfers last summer was less than that.
The link below to C&H’s own Sean Whetstones article:
        https://www.claretandhugh.info/transfer-spend-approaches-172m/

This suggests a net spend of £89mil. with potential further sales of Cornet, Aguerd etc.
A BBC report suggested net spend £85mil.

The season before (23/24) West Ham actually had a net surplus on transfers in excess of £20mil.

  • Ted Fenton says:

Today was an all time low. We have to be favourites to go down next year.
Maybe Sully should consider selling . He has been a decent owner but we have tried changing everything else

  • Peter says:

Sergio Conceicao looks to be on his way out from A.C.Milan and seemed to be a favourite to take over from Lopetegui before Lady Bradys boyfriend piped up and Potter got the job. Do we give Potter a transfer window or change in the summer? I’m all for change as Potter isn’t impressing in the slightest.

  • mark wiggins says:

Just not good enough got to do better then this !

  • Hammer says:

Can’t put all the blame on Potter the team can beat Arsenal at theirs one week and then play crap like this today. Think they have their bags packed for summer holiday already. They should have more pride and thought for the supports who pay good money to watch them.

  • Timbo says:

The one positive is Fullkrug lasting 80 mins. Just hope we have a number of decent midfield targets lined up for the summer because the current lot just ain’t up to sctatch.

  • John says:

Nice to know Potter & Co are already on their summer holidays.

  • John says:

  • Devo's Tash says:

Very generous scores there. No player deserved more than a 4. Remember this is mathematically the worst team in Premier League history.

  • Esexiron42 says:

Will people on here still be saying give Potter more time after yet another completely embarrassing performance against the worst team in PL history?
Surely we should be more than capable of beating Southampton new manager or not?

3 wins from 13 games and already statistically the worse manager in his first 100 days we have ever had, yet he insists we do not need a major squad rebuild. To go to a back 5 after 85 minutes only to then concede an equaliser without 2 minutes of injury time shows how far we have gone backwards. Another management failure and he is fast running out of excuses.

  • Jimmy says:

It takes great foresight by the board to actually appoint a Manager/coach Who is worse than the dickhead they just got rid of!! We are very lucky not to be playing Southampton next season

  • ricardo says:

Happy first halves do not seem to exist for West Ham. A hesitant team, lacking confidence, and any clear ideas. Glimpses of improvement with the opener, thereafter few other clear chances, a shame Guilherme did not score after Fullkrug set him up. Again a very disappointing performance. And before Kudus gets transferred, he should try to transfer some of his fighting spirit to the -so far- rather timid Guilherme.

  • Jeeps says:

    Another 2 points gone missing.
This was the one that was almost a certain win (if there is such a thing).
40 points should have been easy.
Doesn’t give out much hope for remaining games.
Wolves look to be on a run which means we’ll be last in league.

  • Ess_Bee says:

    F F S…

  • Martyn says:

I think you’ve had one too many! 1-1 at home to a side already relegated equals no more than a 5 to anyone. They were shocking and that includes the manager.

  • Kip says:

My god where do we go next ..Potter then isn’t the awnser…….WE ARE SO BAD it’s just mind numbing….some ratings of 6 and 7 and 8 🤣🤣🤣👍what was you watching 🤣

  • Andy Stone says:

So depressing, and to be asked to believe that we don’t need an overhaul is remarkable. Next season should worry the board to sleeplessness. In relegations of the past we’ve taken an attempt or three for promotion but should we go down these days it could be ever so much longer.

After an away loss at Anfield some of the more accepting YouTube channels were somewhat upset. It’ll be interesting to see their responses after a home draw with a team likely to be relegated with only 11 points.

  • Taffyhammer says:

Thought they might at least throw us a bone to keep us interested. But no.

    Very disappointing display and result.

To think I’m missing Wrestlemania in Las Vegas to watch this West Ham team.

    • Essexiron42 says:

Mate enjoy Wrestlemania weekend in Las Vegas. It’s got to be a million times better than the dross which West Ham served up again today.

  • Lucky Eddie says:

So sorry for the fans that pay to go and watch this dross. 63 years watching and former weekly attendee both thru the gates or season ticket holding. Its so frustrating now to watch this team.
I don’t know who’s should be blamed for serving this crap , there’s those who say the manager or the board, but really it doesn’t matter ,.
Just so sad now to watch rubbish

  • Ian Bishop says:

    Spot on John Ayris !!
Potter is worrying me more and more .
With 5 mins to go he goes to a back 5 against by far the worse team in the league
We lost all shape ( at one point Soller was playing on the right wing ??)
We took off all 3 of our front players !!
Everyone keeps saying get this season over with but with this team we are definitely going down next season .
We are so slow in build up …..we had 4 shots on target today !!
Potter really reminds me of Southgate the way he plays extra safe …..
Todsy is a wake up call to everyone at he club as Southampton are a good championship team and we looked no better than them and u could argue a point flattered us as Dibbling missed a sitter !!

  • John Ayris says:

We’re poor, and that includes Potter, relegation candidates for next season the way things are. The promoted teams next term are unlikely to be as bad as this time. Southampton could have won that.

    • Carrick hammer says:

I really didn’t think we could get any more negative then we were under moyes but potter has managed to achieve this. 2 corners against the worst team in prem league history.the majority of these players and the manager should be ashamed of themselves. Wake up sullivan or there will be no supporters left .

    • Kip says:

1_1 with Southampton at home and you give as high as that ..my god how much have we fallen….bit sureal tbh ……….my god we are bad team …with some decent players….work that out

SOUTHAMTON who could come to be the worst ever premier league side EVER …with respect wtf mate

      • D says:

The irony is they probably now won’t be the worst ever premier league side, simply because they got a point off of us 😂
        How crap are we………..
