West Ham 1 – 1 Southampton | The morning after

If West Ham were seriously interested in raiding Southampton for additions in the summer, yesterday’s painful 1- 1 draw must have served as a reminder of the paucity of talent in the bottom side: One Southampton player in particular probably killed off any chance of a London Stadium rescue from the championship with a relegation-level performance.

West Ham have been reported to be looking to upgrade their goalkeeper and linked with Aaron Ramsdale. The former England shot stopper looked shaky and should have ended on the losing side but for some over zealous protection from the referee after he flapped when jumping against Fullkrug for a corner. The ball bounced harmlessly into the net only for the referee to award a foul against the Hammers attacker.

Two or three other flaps at crosses showed him up to be an average keeper in a very average side.

If that’s the best that West Ham can do, then I’d suggest Ramsdale will be on course to add to his tally of three relegations if he comes to West Ham.

As for the others – Tyler Dibling missed a sitter, Kyle Walker Peters looked his usual pacy threatening self and Taylor Harwood-Bellis was anonymous. But anyone seriously considering Ramsdale as a summer recruit needs to watch that game a couple of times. The warning signs are there.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Ramsdale has been outstanding for a very poor Saints side this season, would be overjoyed if he stayed, watched every game and can’t think of any mistakes that have resulted in goals conceded.

  • Smiffy says:

Why did we take Graham Potter? His win rate as a premier league manager was
28.39%, hardly a recommendation on your CV .
Typical WHU board decision, save money by taking on an unemployed coach.

  • John Ayris says:

We are poor make no mistake. I include Potter in that as it was his decision to take off three offensive players and to sit back against a poor team at home.

We’re that poor that we’re a favourite for relegation next season, we’re fortunate that the promoted teams this season are so woeful.

We have no remaining leeway for any more lacklustre decisionmaking of the like that has us regressed to where we are.

In the games I seen Ramsdale play over the years, I’m still at a loss to why people think he’s a Premier League player.
    Just MHO

    Plus, he ex-Sheffielf Utd.
