Areola:6 Good save on 10 mins stopped it becoming 2-0. Got lucky when Baily hit the post after he’d rushed out of his goal and missed the ball. Smart stop on 55 mins.
Coufal:6 Tried to get forward where possible but often very narrow when defending which was clearly a tactical instruction. Excellent cross in the second half set up Antonio for a half chance.
Mavropanos:6 Looked to handle Watkins well as West Ham were under pressure for most of the first half.
Kilman:6 Unable to block Duran’s shot as the Hammers target predictably scored Villa’s winner. Good interception stopped it being 3-1.
Emerson:5 Found himself on the right wing following an exchange of passes with Paqueta and forced a corner. Struggled defensively.
Rodriguez:5 Often on his own in midfield as Soucek pushed forward. Not afraid to put his head in where it hurts.
Soucek:7 Poor technique led to an unnecessary corner from which Villa scored. Won a penalty with excellent chest control and drew the foul from Matty Cash. Missed the chance to clinch a point in the 96th min.
Paqueta:6 A shadow of the player who performed so well against Celta Vigo. Cut a frustrated figure as West Ham were outclassed but then played a long ball to Soucek which created the penalty. Cool and calm as he slotted him from the spot to score the Irons first goal of Julen Lopetegui’s reign.

Bowen:4 Saw little action in the first half as the Hammers launched long balls in desperation. Not involved in the second half and hooked on 72 mins.
Kudus:7 Lucky not to concede a penalty in the first minute. One good cross in the first half as he tried to get the measure of Matty Cash. Scintillating run early in the second half set up Soucek and continued in impressive style. Moved to the right following Bowen’s exit.
Antonio:3 Failed too follow Onana for Villa’s early opener. Not hugely involved.
Substitutes
Summerville: On for Bowen in the 72nd min as part of a triple switch. Looked sharp.
Fullkrug: On for the tiring Antonio, no impact.
Ward Prowse: Replaced Paqueta.
Todibo: 84th min double sub for Coufal as J-Lo chased the game.
Ings: On for Rodriguez. Headed straight at the keeper following good work from Summerville.

Paqueta and Antonio less than expected. Hence attack buildups were few. West Ham looked better after the 1-1. Soucek energy great, technique not so much. Missed more presence of Bowen in attack. Kudus passing not quite as magic as his dibbling abilities.
Todibo should be a plus. It will take time for the team to gel.
We need time when new players bed in we will be a force lipo don’t mess with who he subs
Whilst disappointed with the result I did say during the week on here it will take time for the players to adjust to the system and to each other. The new players who were on the bench obviously are not up to speed yet.I think it’s important not to be overly disappointed with today I think the improvement will come in time
As with Moyes, standing off opposition giving far too much time on the ball. Parted like the waves a couple of times and got away with it. Need to up the tempo everywhere and win second balls……early days, let’s see what happens next few weeks but massive improvement needed.

I did say a while back that Duran would score the winner, just didn’t know who for back then 🤣 to late now Hammers because he’s staying at VP. Good luck for the rest of the season 👍
3 out of 10 for Antonio way too generous. Completely failed to track Onana and did absolutely nothing as a target man or even do the basics like pressing the keeper, get rid asap. Soucek and Coufal nowhere near pace of the game and Villa just carved through our defence and both should be nowhere near our starting 11. Even Jarrod was anonymous and had no impact on the game and Areola just does not command his area.
On the positive side Kudus on the left hand wing and Paqueta both at another level and very positive debut from Summerville and few minutes from Tobido. 64% possession from 31st -60th minute also promising but only 43% in opening 30 minutes with familiar slow start. Of course we need to give players time to adapt and for new players to integrate but hope to see more new signings playing from the start over next few weeks.
