Max Kilman’s West Ham career looks to be hanging by a thread after a disastrous display against Leeds United ended with him being booed by his own fans.
The £40 million defender handed Leeds a crucial moment with another costly mistake, and the reaction inside the London Stadium told you everything you need to know. When the crowd turns like that, it’s not just about one error — it’s been building.
For West Ham, this isn’t just about one bad performance. It’s about a big-money signing who looks completely shot of confidence at a time when the team can’t afford passengers.
Kilman gamble backfires as Nuno forced into selection decision
Kilman’s inclusion raised eyebrows before kick-off. He hadn’t started since the FA Cup win over Burton Albion and only came into the side because Jean-Claire Todibo and Konstantinos Mavropanos were missing.
It felt like a forced decision rather than a tactical one — and that’s exactly how it played out.
The warning signs were there early. He was lucky not to concede a penalty in the first half after some clumsy defending, and you could sense the nerves both on the pitch and in the stands.
Costly mistake confirms growing West Ham concern
Then came the moment everyone feared.
Another rash challenge, another lapse in judgement, and this time Leeds got their reward. It’s becoming a pattern with Kilman — hesitation, poor decision-making, and ultimately mistakes that cost goals. As much as I hate to say it, Kilman has that startled Kalvin Phillips look about him. The trouble with Kilman is, the fundamentals all look wrong. Often on the wrong side of the attacker and very poor timing and execution of sliding tackles.
The reality is, at Premier League level, you don’t get away with that for long.
Only a couple of weeks ago, reports suggested Nuno Espírito Santo had already lost faith in him. Watching that performance, it’s hard to argue otherwise. He looked like a player short on belief, and once the crowd got on his back, you knew it would be hard to recover.
Has Kilman already played his last game for West Ham?
From a West Ham perspective, it puts the microscope even more intently on why we signed him at all. Spending £40 million on a defender who can’t be trusted in big moments is a problem — especially when it feels like he was brought in to suit Julen Lopetegui rather than as part of a long-term plan.
Now he’s in a position where he’s lost the manager, lost the fans, and possibly lost his place altogether.
And the reality is, we may have just seen Max Kilman’s final appearance in claret and blue.

Booing is out of order. He has problems, but you can’t say he does not try.
Whatever you think of Kilman you DO NOT BOO YOUR OWN PLAYERS!!
Should never been put in that position.
If Nuno had slightest confidence in him he would have been brought on at Villa game.
Why he keeps occupying a place on the bench is a wasted space.
Perhaps this event will nullify him from being anywhere near match days.
Whu would have won yesterday (without extra time) if it had not been for the penalty.
Whatever is said about booing unfortunately that will stay with until end of season.
If it’s not liked answer is to leave him at traing ground.
Not a fan of booing tbh but if that’s what people want to do it’s up to them. They’ve paid their money.
What I don’t agree with is two grown men close to throwing hands in the home end near kids because they disagree on Kilman.
Ffs there really are some fans out there who are stealing air.
Not content with placing us in jeopardy in the league this man has now cost us a place in the cup semi final . He has single handedly destroyed our defence for nearly 2 seasons . He should never have been selected yesterday . Nuno got it so wrong . He is a liability . There is NO PART of his game that is even average . He should be back in the second tier of football where he belongs . HE MUST NEVER PLAY FOR US AGAIN .
Disgraceful to boo your own player. I recall mildly remonstrating with a couple of fans behind me booing Marlon Harewood. He scored later in the game.
Pity he wasn’t playing yesterday!
That tackle that gave away the penalty was horrendous, just stay on your feet. I think it would be best for all concerned if we have seen the last of him in claret and blue. And we were well on top at the time we completely lost impetus until injury time.
All that said I agree that it is dreadful and cowardly to boo your own player and I hate to see that.
I agree with those who condemn the booing of our own player – unfortunately it is nothing new – I remember the striker David Kelly and goalkeeper Alan McNight being booed by teh fans under John Lyall
We should remember (a) that Kilman is not playing badly on purpose and (b) he is not the one who decided on his transfer fee
Hopefully we won’t need to play him (I hope that Mavropanos will be available for Wolves) and then we will see what will happen with him and many others next season

“Has Kilman already played his last game for West Ham?”
I’d like dollar for every time that’s been said over the last several weeks! And I wish it was his last game, again. To think it used to be said repeatedly that Mavropanos always has a mistake in him. Not anymore, he’s now the rock. But Kilman, when I saw his name in the starting eleven, the first thing I thought was that we were going to lose. And we did, eventually.
I thought that was absolutely disgusting our fans booing Kilman everytime he touched the ball after he gave the penalty away. Especially with the FA Cup there can always be a way back even at 2-0 down, Roy of the Rovers stuff. Where are these Pantomime fans coming from to feel it’s okay to boo a player and actually boo your team at half time, how does that help with confidence?
What sort of fan would boo his own player? Especially when he is short of confidence. I guess the same ones that leave early when we are losing
The kind of person who boos Max Kilman is the same kind of person who walks out and turns their back on the players when things aren’t going their way. It’s the worst kind of personality trait. You should support your team through thick and thin. Try encouragement instead of booing. Try staying till the end of a game and getting behind the players.
never seen a premier league defender who spends so much time on his backside, sliding in when in the penalty area.
he’s done it so many times this season, can’t they coach him to stay on his feet…
