West Ham have confirmed that Flynn Downes has completed his transfer to Southampton. The announcement came via the Hammers’ official website, shortly after Southampton reported that Downes had successfully completed his medical.

Before leaving West Ham’s preseason training camp yesterday, Downes had already agreed to terms on his new contract which drastically sped up the process. While the transfer fee officially remains undisclosed, it is reported to be around £18M.

Expressing his enthusiasm about joining Southampton, Downes stated, “It feels so good, honestly. Walking in this morning and seeing a few familiar faces was truly a pleasure. Being part of this last year was incredible. The entire club and all the people involved are really special. When you connect with such genuine people across the whole organisation, it’s difficult not to want to be part of it. Now, I’m looking forward to settling in, improving my game, playing my best football, and helping the team succeed.”

Amazing that when we sell a player it gets done straight away whereas when we sign a player it goes on for says or even weeks

We didn’t see much of him but the general feeling I got was that he’s an honest hard-working and talented midfielder.

I hope I’m in the majority … disappointed at him going but at the same time wish him well.

As a life-long Hammer the choice must have been hard for him but understandable. As Dec said “you only get one career” and he’s virtually guaranteed to get a regular spot in the Saint’s engine room.

The positive take is this elevates the likes of Freddie Potts and Lewis Orford closer to first team appearances.

Since moving to the Isle of Wight, I’ve been over to watch The Saints quite a few times. In fact, last season I actually went to Saint Mary’s more times than The London Stadium. Flynn Downes was different gravy. I’m gutted he’s left The Hammers, because he seriously deserved a chance. I wish Flynn well, and I’ll see him a few times in red and white next season. But I really wish it was claret and blue.
