West Ham have been handed a surprise boost with news that one of our Academy stars has decided to stay and fight for his place.

Hammers insider ExWHUEmployee revealed late last night that George Earthy has chosen to remain at the London Stadium in an effort to force his way into Graham Potter’s plans.

This comes after fellow Academy graduate Lewis Orford opted to leave, joining League One side Stevenage. Claret & Hugh understands Orford had offers from several Championship clubs but decided high-flying Stevenage was the best place to continue his development.

Ex reported that there had been interest in Earthy, but it’s presumed the attacking midfielder has received encouragement from Potter about his future prospects. So far, the West Ham boss has shown little inclination to use the club’s youngsters, but there is hope that will change with Earthy, Ollie Scarles, Freddie Potts and Callum Marshall all still at the club.

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender 😬⚒️ Irons

Started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

Give West Ham opinions on Sky Sports News and even did a bit of moonlighting on BBC Football Focus.

Sometimes feature on BBC Radio 5 Live and once ate a biscuit in Tony Gales shed.

Connoisseur of salted caramel doughnuts and I love a Sloppy Giuseppe pizza although I'm slightly suspicious where the name came from.

When I'm not moaning about West Ham I can be found walking a dog that looks like a sheep and tinkering with pinball machines.

Well most of those 4 are 20 or 21, they are not youth they are Men so let’s play them or close the academy.

I actually think he would have benefitted going on loan, either to a decent Championship side or abroad. Much better than spending most of the season as a squad/bench player. Another season getting regular games would aid his development and hopefully, a year older he would have bulked up a bit and be ready to play a major role the following season

With the incoming players making so many improvements, WHU for the cup this year. Go for it.

  • Jeeps says:

    Shows their loyalty.
Should be rewarded with some playing time.
Sully’s reluctance to bring in new players hopefully will create chance for them.

  • Jimbo says:

Stevenage Boro is a great choice for Orford to support his development. He will get regular game time for a successful team against quality opposition and return to WHU a better player. Just what he needs at this stage of his career.

At their ages and with all they learn & how far they progress each time they play a competitive game, it serves no purpose being on the bench as mentioned, but I imagine that it is far worse and represents a real setback in their development. Training with the 1st team must be brilliant but we all know that training takes you only so far.

anyway, hope it all comes good and all the good work done so far (club, players) comes to fruition. Lot of clubs focusing on young talent now so we are in a good position for the future at the moment given all the talent in the Academy.

  • David Green says:

It’s good news but we still have Irving,Rodrigues and JWP in the way. All 3 won’t give us what Earthy can,Potter hasn’t seen enough and those have had chances to shine but have failed. Earthy needs to bulk up a bit to take all the physical side he’s going to endure.

  • Simon says:

Would have been good if we got a bit further in the Cup – that way they’d have games where they could get a run

  • Morty says:

Orford is younger than the other three, so it is natural that he should seek a loan for experience

Potter needs to learn from others who blood there youngsters early and as a result get rewards for taking a “chance”….Scarles apart we do not see to many of our young players getting minutes….Scarles now seemingly dropped back down the group after many got on his back for the Liverpool game and how bad he played..ffs he was hung out to dry trying to keep Salah one of the best players in the world in check but he got taught a harsh lesson that day….choosing the matches and game time is important and sensible but to just let them sit on the bench twiddling there thumbs really serves little or no purpose to either the player or the club.

Must be a big season for all 4 given what they each achieved last season and their ages. Be a real test of whether Academy players can make it into the 1st team coming from a successful U21 team. Will tell us if Noble/Potter/U21 coaches are pulling it off, since they are not out on loan.

Great news for the youngsters if all the so-called positivity comes true.

  • Grizzler says:

Let’s hope all four get a few chances to play.
Has agaurd finally left yet? Absolute pillock!

    • Jimbo says:

Yep he has gone thankfully. Another one of the bad eggs cleared out. Cornet loaned out too. Shame Gido didn’t move on.Something potter needs to do in order to address the culture challenge.
