West Ham Boss Promised ‘Significant Backing’ Despite Skint Claims

West Ham boss Graham Potter demanded financial backing when he was appointed Hammers manager in January.

That’s according to our top transfer source, who has indicated that Potter was promised financial support from the West Ham board before taking the job.

Quite where this information fits with recent club disclosures that “we’re skint” and “have to sell to buy” is anyone’s guess. However, Claret and Hugh have it on good authority that Potter drove a hard bargain during his second interview, conducted at the home of chairman David Sullivan.

It has been revealed that the former Brighton boss not only rejected all attempts to join West Ham on a temporary six-month basis but was also promised “significant backing” in the summer.

Clearly, something is amiss with two such differing narratives, but it should be noted that one set of information is coming from the club and the other isn’t.

It could be that West Ham are playing possum, reluctant to reveal how much cash they actually have to spend.

Either way, nobody will truly know until the Hammers start doing business in the transfer window. However, it’s unlikely the club paid Chelsea £1m in compensation for Kyle Macaulay to head up player recruitment if they weren’t planning to be active in the market.

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender 😬⚒️ Irons

Started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

Give West Ham opinions on Sky Sports News and even did a bit of moonlighting on BBC Football Focus.

When Potter was assigned to become whu manager there was a headline ‘Potter will fail without backing’.
That was before all the negative results.
    Somebody was very presumptuous.

What an intelligent post @Bullsh*t man. Would you care to elaborate?

  • Morty says:

Why does the club always feel the need to publicise how much money they do or don’t have to spend?

I suggest it’s all about managing fans expectations and in this case a desperate attempt to get season ticket renewals moving. At the end of the day, they can’t have it both ways.

Pretty straightforward ,Gonzo, if we don’t significantly improve the quality ( and age ! ) of the squad we are only going one way and that’s not up !
I’ve not jumped on the “have a go at Potter” brigade, as I still feel he was handed a can of worms. Hopefully, he will be backed and once he has his own players in then there’s no hiding place – he lives or dies by the sword !
    Should be interesting……
NB: We need a SQUAD, as at present must have easily worst bench in the Prem’, and that includes the three relegated teams.
