West Ham have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of one of Europe’s brightest young midfielders.
That’s according to Sky Sports Germany correspondent Florian Plettenberg, who is reporting that Ezechiel Banzuzi is on the verge of joining RB Leipzig ahead of next season.
The 20-year-old midfielder from OH Leuven is set to move for around €16 million — roughly the same as West Ham’s bid for the player in January.
West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady reportedly offered the Belgian club a “take it or leave it” deal worth just under £14 million, which was rejected.
As Claret & Hugh reported at the time, Leuven decided to hold on to their talented Dutchman, who had been extensively scouted by former Irons director of football Tim Steidten.
While numerous outlets had suggested West Ham would return for Banzuzi in the summer, it was our understanding that this was not the case. As Claret & Hugh revealed in January, new Hammers manager Graham Potter decided against signing the energetic midfielder — instead choosing to identify fresh transfer targets alongside recruitment analyst Kyle Macaulay.
Brady (what does she know!!) gave impression that deal was 90% done.
Same old story an extra £2m and he could have been a whu player.
Just have to make do with other player who wants to come, Baris Alpert Yilmaz.
