Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in pole position to secure Lille midfielder Angel Gomes on a pre-contract agreement, fending off interest from both West Ham and Manchester United.

The 24-year-old England international will be available on a free transfer in the summer.

Since joining Lille in 2020 from Manchester United, he has played over 150 games, scoring 10 goals and providing 19 assists.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is eager to add more firepower in central midfield and sees the player as a valuable addition to his North London squad.

Additionally, Gomes’ versatility—able to play as both a central midfielder and wide midfielder—adds further appeal.

In 2022, Gomes mentioned Spanish midfielders Andres Iniesta and Xavi as inspirations, admiring their style of play.

Currently earning £13,000 a week, the Lille midfielder will be looking for a significant increase in salary, which Tottenham are reportedly willing to offer.

Lee Carsley called the player up to the England senior squad in August 2024, and he made his debut in September 2024 in a 2-0 away win against the Republic of Ireland.

Despite missing nine games this season due to a calf injury, he has largely enjoyed an injury-free career.

West Ham manager Graham Potter is also keen to add the player to his team, with Guido Rodriguez likely to re-join Real Betis at the end of this season.

Kyle MacCaulay and his team will need to move fast, with the player open to exploring all options.

Claret & Hugh were informed by a source close to the player in January that West Ham had made an approach but were ‘A million miles away’ with our wage offer.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.

NOT signing a player that West Ham were never in the driving seat for, is hardly a ‘knock-out’ blow…??

    Hyperbole much?

Come on everyone, realistically he was never going to sign for us in a million years was he?

There are no ‘ free ‘ signings as both player and agent demand signing on fees and bigger wage . Gomes looks and has been fragile and so another expensive broken donkey isn’t what Westham need . Due diligence includes analysis of injury likely hood and as such Westham must focus on durable players .

Phil I would hardly describe him as that. He suffered a serious head injury in August last year where the Reims player was sent off and he received treatment for 34 minutes on the pitch before being taken to hospital. His calf injury this season is something which can happen to any player. Yes the signing on fee and agents fees are likely to be very high, but nowhere near as expensive as his £24 million valuation, and advantage of his comparatively lower wages. Liverpool, Newcastle, Man U, Arsenal and Spurs all interested and they will all have done their due diligence on him.

Right so let’s show some ambition and support our new manager. £13,000 a week for a 24 year old England international is nothing especially when Danny Ings is reported to be earning £125,000 a week and wasn’t even on the subs bench last weekend. Come on West Ham we have a major rebuild in the Summer and Gomes is currently valued at £24 million so getting him to join on a free transfer would be a fantastic signing. Make him a good offer and pre-contract agreement as Man Utd are reported to be interested in re-signing him as a replacement for Casemiro.
