“Dry’ loans, as they’re called, with no obligation or option to buy a player at the end of his stay, can go either way. The player can perform well, like Jesse Lingard did, goals and assists galore catapulting the Hammers into Europe – but then he leaves, like a bridegroom dashing from the altar without committing, leaving supporters wondering what might have been.
Or the loan can go horribly wrong as did Kalvin Phillips’ unfortunate spell, with millions in loan fees paid, clumsy fouls and penalties conceded, red cards and a very public, fractious falling out with fans that presaged a hasty retreat to his parent club with his tail tucked firmly between his legs.
West Ham had the opportunity in the transfer window to make Carlos Soler’s loan from PSG permanent – it would have suited the Paris club as they wanted to arrange another player loan and only two are permitted and out any one time. West Ham declined – at PSG’s very reasonable reported price of £17 million – and left Soler’s loan intact until its expiry at the end of the season. D’oh.

Goals, assists and a whole lot of work: Carlos Soler
To see Soler last night sprint along the touchline, outpacing and out muscling Reece James before being clattered shows how far the Spaniard has come since his leggy introduction in August: He’s obviously worked his socks off. He’s now fully upto speed with the Premier league and a worthy addition to the Hammers’ midfield.
Soler has hinted at wanting to remain: According to the player himself:” I like London, I like playing for West Ham, I like the fans, I like people here and I’m very happy. That’s all I can tell you right now.” There were stories that Soler was prepared to take a big pay cut to stay in East London, to fit into the Hammers’ wage structure.
As he gets fitter, stronger, contributes more and scores goals, the worry is that his value will will rise. West Ham may yet rue not snapping PSG’s hand off for £17 million. It could be twice that in the summer.
Lingard went looking for big money.. after his loan spell…and he chose Notts Forest ..where is he now ? .. let’s hope it works with Ferguson … Todibo .. WTF is his problem ..? … Once Somerville gets back and Paquita … we can show what we can do …. Bowen and Kudas already looks better with Potter then they did with Lopo…..
Soler can play all right and once the Premier is fully under his bonnet we will see it. No doubt Sully has missed a trick and it could cost us either Dosh or losing him. Also he really likes the club and the Easy London atmosphere, just like our previous little favourite Spaniard!
I think that it is right for Potter to have a longer look at him and what he needs for next season – this comes down to the delay in ending the painful JLo reign
Dithering Dave Sullivan strikes again wish someone take the transfers away from him kretinsky please get more involved with our club
That’s how tight Sulivan is! Hope we get him end of season. I think he’s been good under both managers but importantly has impressed under Potter!
Not sure Martin, 1 goal and 1 assist this season, has he done enough every week? Reece James has had repeated knee and hamstring injuries in recent years and his awkward landing after challenging for the header had us all wondering if he had been injured again.
Soler only been given 11 starts, and I certainly don’t see enough to justify his transfer value doubling by the Summer. Leaving his loan intact until the end of the season then making a decision if he is willing to take a big pay cut seems like a good option to me.
Fingers crossed then
Could be same with Ferguson that’s chance you take.
Can’t have your cake and eat as well as the saying goes.
But we had the option so it was no brainer
What’s the point of having cake if you can’t eat it?
Because if you eat it, it won’t be long before you no longer gave it.
We’ve seen enough stuff go down the toilet recentky.
But if you only ate half of it, you would still have cake and eaten it as well. Yum!
