If reports that West Ham hosted Jonathan David’s agent last night are true, then we can probably wave goodbye to any slim chance of signing the player.
So insipid was the Hammers’ display against Newcastle that it would have been difficult to put any kind of spin on the football served up. Perhaps the fact that West Ham operated without a striker could have demonstrated that David would walk straight into the team.
However, the spectacle of Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus being isolated while Alphonse Areola hoofed it long to Dan Burn will have done little to encourage David’s representatives.
The Canadian striker is available on a free transfer at the end of the season, having run down his contract at French club Lille. West Ham’s chances of landing him were already slim to none, but his London-based agent may well have been tempted to make the trip from West to East London last night.
Unfortunately, while he might be able to report a decent financial package to his client, he will no doubt also relay that the Hammers have no supply line for a striker. And with the club admitting they are close to broke, it’s difficult to imagine that changing anytime soon.
I would love to believe that West Ham have a realistic chance of signing a player David’s calibre and the players to supply him, I just can’t see it. But, if he can somehow be persuaded to put aside Champions League football for guaranteed first team football then it really will have been quite a coup by the club.
“Broke”…….same old rhetoric AGAIN🥱
Come on Gonzo there was never a hope in hell of signing David long before last night’s insipid performance and we all know that. Guaranteed 1st team football as a selling point rather than guaranteed Champions League every season when many of the top clubs in Europe after him do us a favour. It’s been reported many times that we had the chance to buy him for £20 million last year but for some completely ridiculous decision turned him down. Why the hell should he be interested in coming to West Ham? We are 16th in the league 2 places a relegation zone, out of all the cups and no chance of qualifying for the Europa Conference League never mind bloody Champions League. Moyesball was well and truly back last night and the thousands of empty seats said it all. Even Nobes looked embarrassed hosting Thomas Tuchel ahead of the England squad announcement. We have about as much chance of attracting top level players as seeing Dec come back and play for West Ham again. By God how we miss him now.
Dream on.
Neither David or Gomes will be coming to whu.
Just another load of speculation.
Need to stick with players who might be within budget.
Hi gonzo, imagine being his agent watching that and trying to sell it to David, it would take gaslighting of Trump proportions to convince him! I fear there’s a real chance that we saw the new striker for next season when Callum Wilson was brought on in the second half, if we really are so short of money or PSR compliance is an issue then it’s the easy solution for our chairman. Cheers
