No wonder West Ham boss Graham Potter was seen clinging on to poor Mateus Fernandes for dear life in the club’s official reveal video.

The Hammers gaffer’s job is hanging by a thread, and with a crunch clash against Nottingham Forest looming, Fernandes could be the man to help him out of a pickle.

While Soungoutou Magassa hasn’t signed in time for Sunday’s Premier League game, Fernandes should be ready to slot straight into midfield.

Hammers managers past and future? Mourinho has been linked with West Ham

Potter will need all the help he can get. Speculation over his future has reached fever pitch, with big names like José Mourinho and Ange Postecoglou already linked as potential replacements.

Both men are currently out of work, ticking David Sullivan’s usual criteria of “available,” so Claret & Hugh asked a top transfer insider if either could replace Potter in the hot seat. The response was blunt:

“None. Neither Ange nor Jose are on their radar at the moment—no chance.”

Of course, it would be easy to focus on the “at the moment” part, but there was no indication that either man is a serious option. Perhaps more tellingly, the idea of replacing Potter wasn’t dismissed outright—just the specific candidates.

For now, Potter’s future may rest on what happens at the City Ground. A win against Forest and he’ll likely buy himself a few more games. A defeat, however, could bring the axe that bit closer.

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender 😬⚒️ Irons

Started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

Gonzo ide take Mourinho allday long Hes just the spark to put some fun and fire back into our football club A SERIAL WINNER

  • Ray says:

West Ham need to do their homework on coach candidates and avoid pandering to what the headline hungry, gossip loving press are trying to push them towards. Mourinho is all about Mourinho and Postecoglou just doesn’t have what West Ham need (otherwise we would have seen it at Tottenham). Potter has not shown any signs of progress, either in his own ability or team development, however, the new signings might just make a difference and keep him in the job for a while. Hard to predict today’s result, but it still looks like 3 points for Forest. The Tottenham game should provide more answers.

  • Luke says:

Mourinho may not bring the traditional West Ham way but he would give us that siege mentality with blood and thunder. I would be up for that every day of the week.

  • Lee says:

That Potter should be under pressure for his job after two games of the season is frankly rediculous. Every new season should be given ten games at least before being judged. Once the transfer window is closed. Once the new players have been bedded into the team. Before the season started everyone was saying spotter needs time. Two losses later and calls for him to be sacked? Madness.

He’s been at the club since January Frank been at Spurs for 8 weeks noticed the difference?

    • d says:

Lee he had more than enough time last to experiment with formations and style and he failed dismally. He has to go.

Ange ball might be difficult with some of the players in the squad, it’s very similar to Bielsa at Leeds, once teams worked it out and fair play to Moyes he saw the flaws in both those approaches and was the first to beat them similarly with DeZerbi at Brighton, if only he was as good at designing teams to attack he would have been the perfect manager though he wasn’t and his system is too easy to contain and exploit.

Mourinho would be a nightmare for Sullivan because he would be too demanding and critical publicly so I suspect despite the rumours it’s unlikely, I keep banging on about it but Glasner looks a perfect fit if Potter can’t turn this around fast.

  • Jimbo 2 says:

Just come back from next Monday and the board have agreed following the 4-0 loss to Forest that Potter will be given 5 more games to save his job. If he fails to win any of those then he’ll be sacked otherwise a poor draw and the clock will reset.

  • Dave says:

Why anyone would work under this regime of any quality would mean they’re not as good as you would think.
No one any good and not desperate would put up with someone leaking to the press every 5 mins, dabbling with his own agent mates for transfers and absolutely no vision, plus being the one person between a disillusioned fan base and the board.
    Forget anyone who has options.

  • AM says:

AT THE MOMENT being the operative word For me either Ange or Jose would be a better upgrade on who or should i say what we already have Stats from his previous team should have held up a red flag Brighton was his only success story in England and Swiss football doesn’t compare Why on earth did Sullivan listen to the woman SHE will ruin the team with her tactics and attitude Getting to much like Alan Sugar

  • Rob. G says:

If Potter changes the system it might help his cause. Deploying three central defenders with wing backs doesn’t work and hasn’t done so since he took over. But for some reason he seems obsessed with it.

    • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

I know mate, described it as an inverted bowl earlier when teams pin us back which they seem able to do with ease. If you look at what Liverpool are doing now and City trying to emulate, the back four is fixed but the rest is largely fluid which allows them to isolate and overload different areas of the pitch as the game is evolving, its a problem Potter needs to solve by playing with different formations, if he wants to be possession based we better improve without the ball and with the ball through the thirds.

  • Andy says:

Come on why would Sullivan employ a serial winner. Only serial losers from the top to the bottom at this club

  • Kenny Irons says:

Thank God for that, Mourinho is now “The Average One” and would bore the pants off the fans as much as Potter !
Problem is as we all know, is that as long as Sullivan rules the roost some underwhelming journeyman will walk through the door.
This has to stop – we need to buy a good manager out of contract then good things will happen. Marco Silva would be my choice….

  • Phil says:

I’d take that with a pinch of salt if true at all. Brady loves ange. And if it’s a choice Jose, dyche, cooper or wilder to save you from Armageddon who you taking?

  • Bacon sarnie says:

I think the world and his wife are expecting nothing but a win for Forest tomorrow, but if Potter can get a bit of bite out of the team for 90+ minutes and give Forest a hard game then maybe Sullivan might put the axe back in the shed for a while longer
