Following earlier revelations that West Ham are pursuing multiple midfielders in the current transfer window, weāve today sought verification on one of the key names linked with the club by ExWHUEmployee.
The Hammers have been associated with more midfielders than most of us can remember, but one name that stands out for me is Southamptonās 21-year-old Portuguese playmaker, Mateus Fernandes.
Despite Southamptonās relegation last season, Fernandes enjoyed a strong campaign and was identified by Ex as a player of interest to Graham Potter. So, earlier today, we contacted our transfer sourceāwho has been involved in numerous Premier League dealsāto find out whether thereās genuine interest.
The same source told us yesterday that West Ham were unlikely to make a move for Sheffield United goalkeeper Michael Cooper. However, it seems there is firmer interest in the Portuguese U21 international.
They told us: āYes, West Ham have made an approach, but there are more than 10 clubs in for him [Fernandez]. Mendez is his agent and some big European clubs are interested. Heāll leave Southampton, but I’m not too sure it will be to the Premier League.ā
If accurate, itās a real shameābecause Fernandes appears to have all the qualities needed to improve West Hamās midfield.

If ten other clubs are interested, West Ham are probably bottom of that list.
Iām more concerned about the lack of transfer activity rather than roumour . We are slow in the market DS needs to get the wallet out now . Not good enough.
Availability of suitable players is numerous but not if whu isn’t able to pay.
Where is board’s Ā£90m which they were going to put on the table.
Remember Back Potter or he will fail.
I know it is your job of work Gonzo but seriously unless players are on a free or ultra dirt cheap we aint getting them….look how long this GK farce has been going on…….so don’t hold your breath for anyone to come in until we lose first few games then panic will set in money will appear from nowhere but it will be to late and that is all down to the board not Potter which is how they hope we will think…nope it is the board and the man at the head who will be responsible for this mess 100%
“Fernandes appears to have all the qualities needed to improve West Hamās midfield.”
Then again, Gonzo, it really doesn’t take that much in quality to improve West Ham’s midfield! We all know just how woeful it is right now. What it does take though is money. Say no more! š
