Claret & Hugh has learnt this morning that West Ham came very close to completing another piece of deadline day business, only for the deal to collapse at the last minute.

With the clock ticking down, West Ham’s incoming transfers were underwhelming—but behind the scenes, the club nearly offloaded Guido Rodríguez.

Rodrigues could have moved to Saudi

Speaking to a transfer source who has been involved in multiple Hammers deals in the past, C&H were told: “We got West Ham a deal for Guido Rodríguez. It would have been €8m per year NET for the player.”

However, the deal was blocked by the Argentine’s agent, who demanded more money and “thought he could get an offer to match that from Mexico.” Suffice to say, the interest from Mexico didn’t materialise and the player has remained at The London Stadium.

Rodríguez remains one of the club’s highest earners, on just over £100,000 per week, and recent reports of West Ham struggling to shift the player now appear accurate.

The 31-year-old has been holding out for a return to La Liga, but interest was limited to just one club, who never came close to matching his current wages. That left a straight choice—accept a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia, or stay in England.

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender 😬⚒️ Irons

Started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

Give West Ham opinions on Sky Sports News and even did a bit of moonlighting on BBC Football Focus.

Sometimes feature on BBC Radio 5 Live and once ate a biscuit in Tony Gales shed.

Connoisseur of salted caramel doughnuts and I love a Sloppy Giuseppe pizza although I'm slightly suspicious where the name came from.

When I'm not moaning about West Ham I can be found walking a dog that looks like a sheep and tinkering with pinball machines.

If he is 10000k a week for doing nothing would any want to move put the blame on Sullivan for getting another free transfer wrong

Seems incredible that Mexico would be offering more than Saudis 8 million a year somehow.

Idiot he should have gone and greedy agent

  • George Howell says:

How did we end up paying Rodriguez £100,000 a week ? Another Steidten masterpiece. And yet there were rumours that Liverpool were head hunting him. Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City etc must be sorry that they weren’t !

Something doesn’t quite seem to add up with that, really.

The whole thing with Saudi clubs is them paying ridiculous wages so if he was offered a deal and his agent believed he could make an equal amount in Mexico then… yeah. Seems a bit off to the ol’ sniff test.

That said, the Saudi window is open until the 10th so maybe some club will be foolish enough to take him off our hands.

he should be told that from now on he will be training with the under 21s and that should get him moving. He is blocking a pathway for potts and earthy. MX window is still open as is the saudi window.

I agree the guy is next best to useless in the PL, but he is not blocking anyone at West Ham, that is all down to the management. I would have him cleaning boots, even at £100,000 per week.

Doesn’t seem fair to inflict him on the U21s. If he is being paid to be in the first team squad, then that is where he should be. If he is not wanted there as a player then turn him into a traffic cone.

  • DJHammer says:

Saudi Pro League window remains open until week three September. So if this report is accurate, Guido may yet depart and if so, enter stage left Josh Brownhill per chance?
