West Ham Exclusive | Top source reveals Potter’s stance on Callum Wilson

Image for West Ham Exclusive | Top source reveals Potter’s stance on Callum Wilson

In a move that’s already dividing fans and pundits alike, Callum Wilson is being lined up to join West Ham United on a free transfer, following his release from Newcastle United. The 33-year-old striker, who has notched 88 Premier League goals across spells with Bournemouth and Newcastle, could arrive in East London with a point to prove—and Graham Potter, apparently, is backing him all the way.

Claret&Hugh approached a top source within the club earlier today to seek clarification on Graham Potter’s stance on taking Callum Wilson: Was he involved, did he agree with the signing? The response ?

“He [Graham Potter] is happy as long as contract is very success-related”

You’d assume that this contract will be heavily linked to goals and appearances.

Despite Potter’s earlier insistence that West Ham didn’t need another striker this summer, sources inside the club suggest the manager is fully on board with Wilson’s arrival, viewing him as a low-risk, high-upside option to bolster the attack. With Niclas Füllkrug’s fitness still a concern and young talents like Daniel Cummings and Callum Marshall likely to be squad players, Wilson could arguably, have something to offer West Ham.

Wilson’s career, remember,  has been plagued by injuries, including multiple hamstring and calf issues, a fractured foot, and two ACL tears during his Bournemouth days. Over the past two seasons alone, he’s missed 57 matches due to various setbacks. Newcastle even offered him a pay-as-you-play deal, which he declined—a clear sign he’s not banking on staying fit for 38 games!

Still, when fit, Wilson is lethal. He scored 18 goals in the 2022/23 season, helping Newcastle qualify for the Champions League, and has a reputation for getting in behind defenders—something West Ham sorely lacked last season.

Wilson is represented by Unique Sports Group, one of the most influential agencies in English football. His agent Will Salthouse is playing a key role in securing a deal.

With a short-term contract and performance-based incentives reportedly on offer, West Ham will hope Wilson can stay healthy and rediscover his scoring touch, should a deal be agreed.

Out of the frying pan (Ings) in to the fire (Wilson). Shame Sullivan is rich enough to own this club. World class stadium. World class team. I look forward to him signing this week and then the announcement next week he’s out for 3 months. At least we can look forward to playing our best player (Bowen) out of position.

    Seven years too late.

THIS HAS GOT TO BE A JOKE

So, a Forest reject (JWP) and now, maybe, a Newcastle reject (Wilson) .. Gyokeres and Ekitike were both strongly linked in the past, but we didn’t stump up the money and now it’s back to the Benni McCarthy / Diego Tristan days .. Proven PL player is always DS default mode whenever there’s a sniff of relegation in the air and it’s that old, high wage, high agent fee, no resale value model that has put us in this position ..

  • Morty says:

    At least Ings was fit

All the denying from Sean and co on this site about Wilson not a player the club are interested in as he does not meet the criteria of young hungry quick players….but of course Sullivan has always wanted the player and no surprise Salthouse is his agent so the deal is and never has been in doubt…any fan of this club new this was going to happen and do not be surprised if Vardy or DCL turn up as well

FFS our club will NEVER learn whilst Sully is there.

    Same old same old.

Why can’t we go after that Richard Kone guy? Far better option than another Journey Man Has Been with two wooden legs Wilson.

Honestly our current Board are the worst thing that ever happened to our great football club.

Diouf signing is in the right direction. Wilson is in the opposote direction. Sully just can’t help himself!!!

  • Hammeroo says:

Graham Potter should stand up and tell Sullivan that if he signs Wilson or any player against his (Potter’s) wishes then he walks. Surely Potter must have some kind of detail in his contract to guard against interference? Surely David Sullivan must be more hated than Newcastle’s former owner Mike Ashley!

1 step forward 2 steps back,

    its the sullivan way

  • J says:

I’m guessing Potter said no to Wilson but since has realised it’s the best striker he’s likely to get out of Sullivan so has grudgingly accepted as long as he’s in a free and a pay as you play contract or something. Which if that’s the case maybe won’t be too bad a signing as a player to come off the bench last 15 minutes or so. Sully can’t resist a bargain basement punt. Maybe Wilson will be more of a success than Ings. Who knows stranger things have happened.

Welcome to the new Danny Ings.

  • Iron57 says:

This would be a typical, short termist Sullivan signing. Exactly the sort of signing that has seen the club’s fortunes plummet. Clearly, there is no interest in learning from past lessons.

  • Steve says:

If Potter or anybody at the club thinks “sick note” Wilson is going to appease the fans I’m afraid their in for a bit of a shock, don’t know how many season tickets are un-sold but I can virtually 100% gaurantee they won’t be rushing to buy them on the back of “sick note” Wilson.

  • James smith says:

This site loves to push Sullivan agenda. Anyone can see it’s a transfer he is forcing on potter. Can’t believe it’s this early in transfer window and he is pushing these free crocks on the manager.

  • Garry crawford says:

It’s not dividing the fan base I would say 99% don’t want Wilson the other 1% is fans who ain’t got a clue .

  • rich says:

    ffs

  • Julian Woodhouse says:

You have to be kidding. Where does this meet reducing the average age of the squad, he is almost the same age as Antonio. He is injury plagued and has disaster written all over it. Far better options that we can develop at the same time.

  • Tengallonallen says:

Sullivan is winding us up isn’t he???

    • ronnie bruno says:

Classic media spin, clearly leaked by the club. “He [Graham Potter] is happy as long as contract is very success-related”? But why would he even be involved with contracts?

This has Sullivan written all over it, brings in a Salthouse player, and if it goes wrong, hang Potter out to dry as the fall guy. Turn it in. There are far better freebies and loan options out there.

  • BF Lenny D says:

    Has he got BUPA /

  • Throllope says:

Sounds like another old crock we don’t need.
Better get the walking frame prepared.

  • Phil says:

Pathetic ……and they wonder why season ticket holders don’t renew …..

  • Paul Taylor says:

I’ll suspend my alliance to WHU if Wilson ever turns up in a Hammer’s jersey, we all deserve better than that

  • Matt says:

We only need to focus on the goals Wilson scored last year………. Zero, nada, none!

Why don’t we just sack Potter now and appoint Sullivan as manager as well as our transfer guru!

Circus is a compliment as they provide entertainment. West Ham are just an embarrassing joke of a club.

  • MJ says:

Quickly checks the date to make sure it is actually July and not April 1st, no it’s real, this isn’t a horrible practical joke Sullivan is going to inflict the injury prone 33 year old Will Salthouse player Callum Wilson on Potter and West Ham fans.

  • Dave says:

    What an absolute joke.
This club never learns, we are crying out for some pace up front and we go for another injury ravaged oldie who just wants another pay day.
I wonder why Newcastle didn’t keep, because they know.
    Clueless club.

  • Saul says:

Personally, I don’t see why not. Could also help the youngsters with his wealth of knowledge as a top attacker. It’s only his fitness that stopped him being a regular 20 goal-a-season player

  • mark wiggins says:

No no no not young and upcoming not the profile Potter wants . Had Sullivan’s marks all over it spend some money and back Potter. Really sick of this board success on the pitch brings financial success the board are not bright

    • Julian Woodhouse says:

He is no good to us if he doesn’t stay fit is he? There are far better and hungrier options that won’t break the bank and have longevity as well. This has disaster written all over it.
