How the fortunes of West Ham have changed inside seven days: Listless and lacklustre in the home defeat last week against Brentford, and one week later tenacious, relentless and combative in a superb rearguard performance at the Emirates to leave with three points and a clean sheet.
The satisfaction for the visiting fans was evident with the ‘ole’s ringing out early in the second half as West Ham looked composed and comfortable on the ball, stroking around the passes away from home and winning plaudits form the claret and blue army.
Just an hour gone and the Hammers’ fans afternoon was made even more enjoyable as former West Ham captain Declan Rice was hooked by his manager after a barren, listless performance.
The Arsenal midfielder’s walk off the pitch was accompanied by the highly appropriate “You should have signed for a big club” anthem from West Ham fans who just could not hide their delight.
Worse was to come for Arsenal as Rice’s replacement Myles Lewis-Skelly being sent off, having his yellow card justifiably upgraded to red after hauling down Mohammed Kudus and denying the rampant Hammer a clear goalscoring opportunity.
After an 11-2 aggregate score in the last two games, West Ham fans had to make the most of every second of this rare clean sheet, away win and moment of triumph against their north London neighbour.
Bubbles rang out across the Emirates – the perfect end to a perfect afternoon.
Now I played a bit on Sundays as I’m sure many have. Nowhere near that level. I used to play against my mates who I grew up with and played with for the school on Saturdays. I always found it a bit strange playing against them. Really weird. Not sure I ever put it about against them. Don’t get on my case!!! I know it was shit footy and totally different and I wasn’t on 200k a week. Just saying it’s the mindset. Anyway he made his choice so it’s his problem. And I’m through and through hammers born an bred half a mile from the old ground and either way I’m.delighted with the points.
He could’ve been a legend if he’d stayed with us.. sad really⚒️⚒️
Got to say that being subbed off must have hurt him more than the result. Should have gone to City. Do t get the fascination with Arteta, his dark arts and persona deserve what they are getting.
Big Up for our players yesterday
Aside from his brilliant years as a loyal servant to the claret and blue, we should love Dec even more for sabotaging his new club every time they play WHU. His little mock-disappointment when he let AWB’s cross fizz over his head so Bowen could nut it in, was a joy to behold!
I Have no interest where the Gooners finish in the table only where we finish Rice was sold to the highest bidder as it was in our interest. As for the game we played really well especially after the last one where we underperformed big time i felt the team selection was good and really played to our strengths so hopefully we should be able to start looking up the table.
Weii done west ham you have done your selves a favour by beating, these boasting, belly dancers, Arsenal. Well done W.h.
A Brilliant display from everybody .Bring Leicester on.Nick the Hammers circa 1966 .C F.N.
Brilliant performance from all the West Ham team, what a difference a week makes. COYI ⚒️⚒️
Weren’t they also singing “your just a shit Andy Irving”? Made me laugh.
It was even better to hear our fans singing “Second again Ole” and “Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that”.
Ollie Scarles – take a bow young man, what a full debut. Brilliant performance from our team, and credit to Graham. After the disappointing result last week what a day to be a very proud Hammer.
