This weekend’s re-emergence of one particular name as a Hammers’ target – via an article in the Standard.co.uk has caused eyebrows to be raised amongst many West Ham fans who have grown weary of the club’s litany of failed striker signings and are anxious to avoid another Fullkrug-esque injury-prone frontman arriving at London Stadium.
Yesterdays’ article detailing ‘talks’ between Dominic Calvert-Lewin and West Ham-reported to have taken place a couple of weeks ago – has now been denied by a Hammers’ club spokesman who repeated the line from months (or was it years) ago when the story last gained traction.
For those who took to the Claret and Hugh forum to voice their-erm- ‘lively’ opinions, there came the reassurance that wherever Calvert-Lewin ends up, it won’t be at West Ham: As reported in Hammers News the West Ham source maintained the club stance would be no different now that Calvert-Lewin was a free agent: “No change, not interested”.
The comments on the C and H forum show pretty clearly that fans want West Ham to show more ambition:
“Calvert Lewin is not good enough to lace the boots of Danny Ings.”
“Just what we need. An ageing, injury prone striker with a below average scoring record. He’d be such a typical West Ham signing.”
“We don’t want Calvert-Lewin he’s not good enough for Everton so why should he be good enough for west ham! If we go down this road of injury prone strikers in their later years on huge wages we will be relegated!!!”
..Would be a pretty fair representation of Claret and Hugh comments. Clearly readers want the club to show more ambition: Finding a Premier-League ready striker- without an injury-prone past is going to take a decent budget which West Ham claim they do not have at present. Once circle that will take some ‘squaring’.
I’m just sick of our mis management Sullivan and Brady have a lot answer for! They just asset strip our team of our best players! Rice should’ve been convinced by Sullivan that he will be the captain and I will build a team around you! Just as we should’ve done with payet.Im afraid that while we have this umambitious board running the club we will achieve nothing! Sullivan seems happy to take the sky tv,and premier league placement money, plus attendance and sponsorship revenue. And as long as west ham stay in the premier league he’s happy that’s enough? Much smaller clubs are rn so much better and have some ambition ie Brighton villa fulham brentford and Bournemouth. We have more income than these teams and have the third wealthiest owners in the premier league. Its a disgrace that the club is run the way it is,and the fans need change now!!!
Same old Sullivan more like Del boy. Scared to get his walet out wants to bate and barter over every single player. Embarrassing Westham are a bloody laughing stock co.pared to the rest of the premier league
No it’s time for sullivan and Brady need to go.total lack of ambition or direction.whats going to happen soon is the fans will get so bored/fed up they just won’t go.
West ham seem to think the more support they get in the bigger the club is.we were promised a new world.if this is our level then it was a mistake to leave our spiritual home the boleyn.i don’t expect to win cups every year that’s not what it’s about.i do expect entertainment and fighting for the badge.ok things cost money if the present lot don’t have it so be it.make way and let somebody else have a go.when the biscuit man took over and we had a mega rich Icelanders.then alo g came the 2008 banking crash.somebody rang sky up and said it could only happen to west ham.when we do spend the quality of player is appalling.chancers hoping to get one last pay day.the whole club needs to be shaken from top to bottom.if not then certain for relegation.its very sad.the whole place has no energy or enthusiasm.without are magnificent support where would we be.?
I agree
No disrespect to Calvert Lewin but we need a fit not injury prone striker and under 25.We do not want a Danny Ings of Fulbright. We always seem to go for players past their best or injury prone
Please let’s get some players signed up.The ones we are looking at are very unlikely to come to West Ham with no European football. We are just kidding the fans and if we sign no one, I predict we will go down.Veri unhappy life time hammer fan.
The owners are going to take us down due to poor player recruiting and lack of ambition
Im sure they put this stuff out there to wind people up!…I reckon West Ham fans blood pressure must be the highest in the league..!!!
What is the point in signing a player that rarely plays, rarely scores and most definitely is not the sort of player that we need.
We have been here so many, many times before.
Anyone who thinks he would be a good signing for us is on a wind up. Might as well keep Antonio because he would most certainly be a better option.
I know as a club we are in a huge mess but CL is not going to help us in the short term, let alone the long term.
Reading the negative comments from so called readers of claret and Hugh, you have to ask the question, who do you honestly expect West Ham to sign then ? The club has been pleading poverty since the end of last season with some bs excuse about psr rules…
Let’s be realistic here we aint shopping in the same catalogue that’s got Gyokeres and other top striker targets in,no, we are in Pound Land scrapping the barrel….so I for one would be happy to see us sign Calvert Lewin, throw away comments from anyone saying he’s no better than Danny Ings, totally different players,he can lead the line, hold the ball up for others and is a massive threat in the air.The big problem is his injuries of course, but hey West Ham wouldn’t be West Ham if we didn’t sign injury prone players, we’ve always done it so why would we stop now.
But if we did sign him,the geezers got a point to prove, and if, big if, but if he stayed fit and was doing the job for West Ham he could be one of the signings of the season.
You’re having a laugh mate? So you’re a happy hammer? You are happy to put up with old injured players playing for west ham, like they’ve done for years on 100k per week 5 yr deals? We need to back potter to change the landscape and insist that we only buy young hungry players with a resale value.Due to psr we have to run the club as a business and can only spend any profits we make.
