West Ham United winger Luis Guilherme is reportedly on the verge of securing a move to the Saudi Pro League, according to breaking reports from The Times.
Gary Jacob reports that the club are currently in discussions to sell the young winger, who has struggled to make an impact since his £20 million transfer from Brazil in the summer.
The former Palmeiras wonderkid was highly touted at the start of the transfer window when Tim Steidten orchestrated a deal for the then 18-year-old winger. Should Guilherme depart at an expected loss, it would add further scrutiny to Steidten, whose summer signings have led to a diminished role in this transfer window.
Notably, Guilherme was unused in West Ham’s victory over Fulham last night, despite head coach Graham Potter being without several attacking options.
Claret & Hugh have contacted sources within the club to clarify the rumours, but the story certainly appears to have momentum
The whole character of your piece supports the reference to your simple word FLOP I am sure all our readers see that , possibly including the LAD himself! End of story.
When are you ever going to cut out your language like FLOP ……..MATE ! RESPECT , that’s all , it is not hard , try it sometime,……MATE.
I really hope this doesn’t prove to be true! We know next to nothing about his ability, have no real way of knowing his potential ability and at the very least he’ll get home grown to our club by the time he’s 21, which we’ll need if we ever get into Europe again. I am talking as a football manager player lol, but he turns good on that 😂 kid just needs time and decent management, we have to remember he is only 18 and JLo was fighting to save his job the entire time he was in the job, he wasn’t about to play an unproven kid fresh from Brazil, I’m confident under GP he’ll prove to be an asset
How gas been a flop, he’s hardly been played.
Let’s all be fair about this. The player isn’t a flop but the signing is. The real under performers here are the board and primarily Sullivan. If Jules was successful and we had opportunity to play Luis then I’m sure he would show his potential. But because season after season we don’t strengthen the team just positions and some positions more than others, we struggle to give young players opportunity.
Now because of the mess we are in we need funds, because we have relied on ageing players for too long. We really bleed the players until they can no longer perform.
If we get money for him that funds areas where we will definitely play the player then it is what it is.
Club needs stability and not this chaotic transfer rollercoaster we have had since Sullivan has been majority share holder of the club.
It’s only 2 games for Potter but he does look like he has more about him than JL. I just worry that the club suffers because of the board and that Potter is made the scapegoat, in the same way Stiedten is now the scapegoat because the manager didn’t get the best out of the players.
This lad has potential he has looked positive when he’s had his few chances.
No offence intended Gonzo, i Just feel for the kid. If he should ever read any of this stuff, he might just wonder what on earth he did wrong. Hopefully someone will point out to him that he does have a lot of West Ham fans pulling for him and wishing him well. You too Gonzo, Happy New Year.
Not to worry ray, happy New year to you too.
I also feel for him . . . moved half way across the world and not given a chance.
I don’t know what people were reading at the time he was brought in as all I saw was that he was a prospect who was expected to make cameo appearances not be a regular first team starter.
It’s the price tag that has given people expectations over and above that.
He hasn’t looked so awful during the limited time he has played, it has to be remembered that he is only 18 and like everything else Lopetegui ballsed up his integration. Potter played him as a sub at Villa and had him on the bench against Fulham is precisely what I was expecting to see when he was signed.
Guillerme might turn into the next Messi but given the scaleof our rebuild that was needed I don’t think that he should have been virtually our first signing. It shows the need for the Head Coach and Director to work closely together
I wouldn’t call him a flop tho
That’s right, John. I think this a lot. I didn’t expect to see hardly anything of him this year. My understanding was this was ‘one for the future’, but I think the major argument to be had is whether WH should have been spending that kind of money on ‘one for the future’ instead of further bolstering the squad with ‘one for the present’. We could have bought Jacob Greaves and further solidified the central defense, for example, for that money.
I hope that Guilherme stays or goes on a domestic UK loan and we have more of an opportunity to see how he develops.
What’d he cost us .. £23m?
Played 43 mins so over £500k per minute.
Poor lad!! No wonder he is deemed a flop. I reckon there was a clause that said if he played a whole 90 mins we’d have to pay another £20m.
Savio even clocked up more apps than him.
Totally agree with comments relating to Guilherme.
When he was signed it was portrayed that he was going to be best thing since sliced bread.
C&H featured his picture for so long he seemed like the prodigal son.
Headlines accompanying his picture ‘gem’ / ‘one to watch’ amongst many relating to his potential.
How can he be a ‘flop’ when he’s not been given a chance.
At least Potter has given him a few minutes.
Luizao is another young lad being used as a puppet on a string.
They won’t loan them out due needing funds.
With all due respect mate, I have tried to explain myself several times in this comments section and a separate piece.
Quite frankly, I’m sick of getting a kicking for calling a **** transfer a flop. It hasn’t worked out, it’s the clubs fault, not the kids and certainly not mine. I’ve supported this lad so many times when he hasn’t been selected but we are about to lose millions on a transfer which has not worked out. I guess I could have gone with the word success but I decided to go with flop.
You’re clearly frustrated with C&H, please go and read somewhere else mate, we’d both be happier as a result. But this is precisely why so many of the other websites have their comments switched off which is what Hughie did and I’ll probably do the same after some of the vile stuff I’ve seen on here over the past two weeks.
Sorry Gonzo, mate. As a journalist, you know full well how important words and wording are, and you surely know full well – surely! – that “West Ham Flop Guilherme” absolutely says that the lad is a waste of space to us. That wording does not, cannot, convey any meaning or even suggestion that ‘West Ham cock up yet another transfer’. It is clear, and unequivocably proclaims: Guilherme is a failure. If you wanted, as you exasperatedly say repeatedly in these comments, to make it clear that the problem is not Guilherme but the way he has been treated, it is not difficult to convey that in a headline. ‘Youngster given no chance by WH wanted by Saudi Arabia’, perhaps; or ‘Brazilian transfer wasted by WH to go to Saudi?’; or any number of headlines which don’t state or imply that Guilherme is the problem. It is so easy to avoid this, even in a headline. Or – as you exasperatedly repeat – you want us all to be clear that this is not your opinion you are reporting, but that of a Times journalist? ‘The Times suggest Guilherme may go to Saudi Arabia’. Not so punchy, though, is it, as your actual headline, I guess
You are cross about the criticism that you are receiving here; but had your headline been even something like, e.g, ‘WH’s failure to be Saudi gain?’, we would all have been agreeing with you, not telling you that your headline is disrespectful to the victim of WHU’s incompetence. You can turn off comments to avoid all the abuse, indeed. And yes, too many of those objecting to the increasingly inaccurate and misleading headlines that are now bedevilling the articles on this site are truly being offensive, personal and out of order, and they can indeed get lost. But this site used to be the one, out of all the many WH supporter sites, that was sober and informed and authoritative: and to see it decline in this way is painful, certainly to me; and seeing you say ‘if you don’t like it, go elsewhere, we’ll be glad to be rid of you’, as you’re saying here, is grievous indeed. Were your headline and text more accurate (he has not ‘struggled to make an impact’: he has been ignored by an incompetent and out-of-his-depth manager, for Pete’s sake: which is what almost everbody here has been pointing out), you would not have this flood of people objecting. You can indeed tell everybody who is unhappy with the direction of travel of C&H to do one; you can indeed turn off the comments because they are too venomous and toxic. Sadly, the venomous and toxic will always smear any comments section; but will silencing all objections and all those holding you to reasonable standards of journalism benefit this website? I really don’t think so.
Well, you have the power. You can refuse to accept justified dissatisfaction, can verily turn us all off. But the hungry sheep look to be fed. With what shall you feed us?
Last summer Westham had about 130 million to spend on 8 or 9 first team players because getting back into Europe was the priority . Is Guilherme a first team player ? If not , it was a mistake by Steidten spending so much on a kid which then financially prevented the signing of Duran . The money can only be spent once with PSR .
It wasn’t Guilherme that prevented the signing of Duran, it was Sullivan who wasn’t prepared to pay a bit more than we had offered, go get Fullkrug as a cheaper option instead. Well he’s worth about £30M more than we offered now is the measure of that decision…
The only flop is the club for not handling a young man’s career. Lopetegui doesn’t promote youth and its proven at club level and Potter has only been in the job for a week, so he’s still learning who he wants to include in his plans from the Summer.
We should be sending him on loan to get the experience and development needed to go on and be the player Steiden and his team have identified. He’s not the finished article like Paqueta was when we signed him, and as a club we need to make our signings work, not give up after a season and lose copious amounts of money. Scamacca and Haller are good examples of money wasted.
OMG the kid is 18. Younger than all of Scarles, Earthy, Potts, Marshall who everyone thinks are going to bust onto the premier league scene “given time”.
Any permanent transfer would be nuts. A loan would be a great idea but only within U.K.
makes my scin crawl to see supposed west ham supporters labelling an 18 year old brazilian kid who we brought over to develop a “flop” after 5 months of not being given a chance by a woefully bad choice of manager.
mark of sullivan all over this club.
He’s only 18! Let him go on loan somewhere. He could be worth 100 million in a few years.
How can he be described as a flop when he hasn’t been given a chance?!
The transfer is a flop John. It’s a headline mate.
He may well be very talented but we’ll never know it seems. But I’m sorry if the word ‘flop’ has offended and triggered sensitivities. I’m sure he’s a lovely boy and a talented player, but we paid £20m, he can’t get inti the first team or the under 21’s and we’re about to lose millions . . . the transfer is a flop mate (and that’s the child friendly inoffensive version).
Not even getting in the u21 team is mad
..you woukd think he.would be first player on the pitch /team …
…..
He was on the bench !! 🙄
Yes indeed, my error Kevin and I’ve corrected it.
Will be the same old story, we will end up selling him on the cheap with no sell on clause & in a couple of years will move to Real Madrid for £60-70 million. Just loan the guy out to one of the clubs we are trying to get a striker from & see how he gets on. Alternatively play him, as we don’t have much else at the moment.
I thought “Ex” said the club were undecided on his future, you make it sound like a done deal? Personally I would like him to stay longer and get his chance
I haven’t made it sound like anything other than what Gary Jacobs wrote and I have provided a link for you to look at his social media.
I said I’d contact the club and get back with an update later.
Wow this is utterly ridiculous…
Can’t believe what I’m reading….give up …good enough for.brszil …but not even given a chance is utterly ridiculous and unprofessional….
Give him a whole game..we might see something..iffs
This stinks of boardroom tactics to dodge some clause and not pay full whack for Guilherme.
I don’t know his contract, but to ship him out after the manager has had only two games is not the managers decision that he isn’t good enough, but the board.
So for the benefit of those of us who do not have access to “a trusted source”, why do you describe Guilherme as a “Flop”? It seems like he has not had much of an opportunity to show what he can do, but when he has played he has not been that bad. Also, he is no older than some of the Academy players who have had less game time but somehow avoid the title of “Flop”.I can read between the lines, but that is dangerously unreliable.
Ray, this is not a story form a trusted source mate, it’s from The Times as I mentioned at the start of the article.
I said I’d report back with an update later once I’d spoken to the club.
As for why I described him as a flop . . . because he cost £20m, can’t get into the team and if Gary Jacobs article is correct, we’re about to lose a fortune.
I guess I could describe it as a successful transfer but I’d be lying.
Incidentally Ray, the success of the transfer has very little to do with the players ability. That said, he could be good, bad or indifferent . . .I honestly wouldn’t know because he’s sat on the bench depreciating for months.
what exactly did you expect from a brazilian 18 year old after 5 months under car crash lopetegui?
do you know what developing players is? i know as west ham supporters who have been living under david sullivan for 15 years it’s a hard concept to imagine.
My god.
You can’t seem to separate what I’m reporting from what I think.
I have written so many times that this kid deserves a chance, that he should be loaned out if we can’t get him in the team or at least in the under 21’s.
Here are previous articles I’ve written: https://www.claretandhugh.info/football-limbo-guilherme-strategy-shows-small-club-mentality/
https://www.claretandhugh.info/wonderkid-guilherme-stuck-in-limbo-as-west-ham-stumble-on-next-move/
Hopefully that’s cleared it up but I’m not entirely sure why you can’t separate a report from ‘The Times’ that he is going to be sold from what I think.
you also described him as a “west ham flop” in your title, like he’s even had a chance yet. it’s not hard to understand why people might get wound up by it. poor kid, coming over to a new country and barely got his feet on the ground let alone given a chance to develop before being labelled a “flop” by his own supporters.
lopetegui was the problem and needed to be removed. sullivan is the one solely responsible for that problem, everyone else gets a clean slate. they don’t deserve the word flop being thrown at them, especially a kid from brazil who was never brought in to hit the ground running.
The transfer is a flop, not him . . . he hasn’t had a chance to prove himself as I have articulated in numerous articles.
I have tried to explain myself and even provide context with previous articles. But if you want to still persist that I’ve labelled him a flop without factoring in anything good I’ve said about him then we really do have nothing further to discuss.
It’s a shame because seemingly numerous articles supporting him clearly count for nothing with you, but one out of context word eradicates anything I might have said previously.
“Guilherme was absent from the squad in West Ham’s victory over Fulham last night” – I thought he was on the bench last night? That’s what the official club site says anyway.
Dutch courage beat me to it. The BBC website says so too.
He absolutely was, you’ll have to excuse me on that.
I was in a rush to get he piece up because I was speaking to someone about Michy Batshuayi at the time and can’t multi-task. Thanks for pointing it out, corrected now.
