Former Watford striker Troy Deeney has remarked on how West Ham have finally got it right with the signing of Niclas Füllkrug. Speaking on TalkSport, Deeney revealed that he has watched Füllkrug closely and believes him to be far better suited to the Hammers than either Sébastien Haller or Gianluca Scamacca.

West Ham paid a combined £77 million for both of those strikers, yet Deeney believes the club has now found far better value in the big German striker.

Speaking to Jim White, he said, “Yeah, I think the way this guy [Füllkrug] plays—I was fortunate to watch him at Dortmund in November, when I went to the Champions League game. He’s a big boy, he’s a solid unit, I like his movement, but he’s clever. This is what people don’t understand about a striker: you’re a gambler, essentially.”

Deeney continued, “Over the years, West Ham have tried to buy numerous strikers who came in for bigger fees, bigger names, and continental technical players. But West Ham don’t play that style of football; they just don’t. So why does Antonio start every season on the bench and then get back in the team? That’s how they play. West Ham have finally signed the right striker.”

High praise indeed from someone who was a regular thorn in the side of West Ham during his top flight career . . . Let’s hope he’s right.

Am not sure. I thought the aim was to build a younger team. Fullkrug is 31 so how many seasons as a striker has he got left. Rodriguez is 30 and now the rumour is Hummels who is 35. These are all players whose best years are behind them and have no resale value. This looks like the West Ham of old not a strategy of building for the future.

We’ve only signed 2 players over 30. I wouldn’t believe the Hummels rumour if I were you.

Füllkrug is the perfect fit style wise to improve our attack. Haller and Scammaca were both much younger but didn’t fit our system, hence Antonio started ahead of both and we took a considerable financial hit.

Signing someone that fits the system is the key to moving forward and adapting to J-Lo’s style of play.

Signing 2 players in Summerville and the boy from Brazil for £50m+ is hardly the same ol’ West Ham / Moyes & Sullivan strategy! One is 22 the other only 19.

The days of Kalvin Phillips type signings having failed miserably are gone along with Moyes.

Tim along with J-Lo are making both signings for immediate first team impact and with an eye on developing players with future resale value.

It will take a few windows to sort out. Bagging Kudus and Alvarez was a superb window, much like this one too!

Give Tim and J-Lo time and I’m confident our squad will be one of the strongest we’ve had in a very long time!

Lopetegui feels it’s important to have a balance of youth and experience and we need players for the here and now. We’ve bought a good mix of ages including Guilherme who is one for the future.

Fullkrug is at his peak. We could get his best years. I’ve not heard a single pundit so far who doesn’t like him or think he’s a good signing.

  • Arun Torgal says:

Fullkrug will certainly be doing well for us but since he is 31, I hope we have a proper backup either already lined up or to be signed. That said, age is just a number and if Fullkrug can give 2-3 seasons of solid football, it is worth it. Best of luck to you Nicolas.

I think if we can keep Antonio who as a starter on occasion or as an impact sub so Füllkrug does not get burnt out we will be fine.

I can see the German doing exceptionally well in the Prem. We also have Bowen who can play as a striker if and when required.

I’m excited at the thought of Füllkrug playing in a team with Kudus, Bowen, Summerville and Paqueta ⚒️♥️🩵
