Ajax Link to Álvarez Leaves West Ham Baffled
West Ham United midfielder Edson Álvarez has today been linked with a surprise move back to Ajax.
Reports began circulating this morning claiming Marijn Beuker, Ajax’s football director, had flown to Istanbul to discuss a possible return to the club for the Mexican international.
Álvarez is currently on loan at Fenerbahçe, so the suggestion of any transfer talks immediately raised eyebrows. When Claret & Hugh put the story to a top London Stadium source, their response mirrored that surprise.
“He’s on a year’s loan and they have an option to sign him in Turkey, so I’m not sure where the story comes from.”
Loan Terms Shut the Door
That position was reinforced by the agent who negotiated Álvarez’s move to Fenerbahçe, who told Claret & Hugh moments ago:
“He is owned by West Ham. Ajax can’t take him. He’s on a season-long loan agreement.”
It is entirely possible the Ajax delegation are in Istanbul in pursuit of an entirely different player. One thing is clear, however: if they have travelled to Turkey to sign Edson Álvarez, it is the first West Ham have heard about it.
They’re probably lining up a agreement to buy him for slightly more than the option fee west ham have agreed to sell him at straight after his option is activated.
