West Ham are expected to make a ā€˜firm bid’ and ramp up their interest in a key transfer target this week.

With the Premier League opener against Sunderland looming large next Saturday, ExWHUEmployee has revealed the identity of the next player the Hammers will bid for.

Mateus Fernandes of Southampton is said to be one of two prime transfer targets and, judging by Ex’s big reveal, it seems the Portugal U21 star is first in line.

Quite why West Ham have waited so long to make the elusive ā€˜firm bid’ is anyone’s guess, given how crucial the position of midfield is to Graham Potter’s team.

Fernandes has attracted more attention than just West Ham

Despite Southampton’s relegation last season, Fernandes enjoyed an excellent campaign and is valued between Ā£25-30 million. West Ham have done business with the south coast club in recent years for Flynn Downes, James Ward-Prowse and Maxwel Cornet, so there should be good communication between the clubs.

Fernandes was on the bench for yesterday’s win against newly promoted Wrexham, and Sky Sports openly mentioned West Ham’s interest in the player. He would certainly bring some much-needed qualities to the Hammers midfield and, if we could sign him, it would be something of a coup

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender šŸ˜¬āš’ļø Irons

Started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

Give West Ham opinions on Sky Sports News and even did a bit of moonlighting on BBC Football Focus.

If it’s between Fernandes and Ramsey as the apparent top two targets then it really should be a no-brainer.

Villa are trying to get Ramsey signed to a new deal so not only are they not looking to sell and wanting more money if they were to, he’s seemingly not interested in joining anyway. Southampton are known to be open to selling Fernandes if his asking price is matched. So meet it.

And on top of that, we’ve done some business with the Saints so presumably have a good working relationship for negotiating with them and Will Still is a known West Ham fan. Villa in the meantime were known to be publicly annoyed with us for the Duran stuff last summer and winter windows.

Said all along Gonzo We get Hermansen done deal add Fernandes that will be a good window

  • Steve says:

Soton have received Ā£60m either in cash or players from the Hammers recently. Let’s agree it’s a better deal for them than for us!

  • Jamie Hickman says:

Everything with this board is like pulling teeth, if we want the player just bid.

  • Doug Beesley says:

We need a goal scoring midfielder as only Bowen and Soucek scored more than 4 last season. Has anyone seen Fernandez record? We do not need another defensive midfielder, we are OK with Alvarez and Potts.

  • Simon says:

West Ham need an entire centre-back revamp, with 1 or 2 new + good midfielders to add to Potts/Alvarez + co.
That will make us competitive and successful.
The current group of centre-backs are not in the mould of the Dawson/Oggie combination, have no spirit, and will not tackle hard, block or head the ball, and no ability to score header goals from corners. What Potter see in them. Oh boy.
Come on West Ham. Do the right thing. God bless.

Nice to see there is still some life in WHU
I suppose I’m a confirmed cynic but then I’m Old so I can be
We often see lovely rumours that regardless of source prove very clever Sully Fakes
Still a couple of weeks yet and I’m sure we’ll see.
Best of luck to both you and the Hammers this season.
Still Banned by ex for some imaginary offencGe 4-5 yers ago perhaps hes a bit sensitive poor lad

Just Walking Pace going the other way as a make weight???

  • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

As oft reported supposedly many clubs are looking at him, would be good to see us signing young players, Bournemouth are and at fairly high prices, youth definitely look to be better than old has beens that may not lose the ball but equally have no penetration.

Potter may have stopped us conceding 2 or 3 a game, he now needs to find a way to increase our xg and JWP doesn’t seem to be that, we have a world class midfielder in Paqueta so lets surround hime with runners and a pacy forward that can run in behind.

  • Benny The Aussie says:

Totally agree, I’d be chuffed if we got this lad and Indrissa ā€˜Marvin’ Gay as well.

    • Teddybard says:

Marvin gay would be a good one to hear through the grapevine

    • Danielson79 says:

I’m not that fussed on Idrissa. He’s a talent but why spend limited funds on a kid that scored I think 5 goals in the french 2nd tier, when Callum Marshall is home grown and looking sharp already?

  • H says:

Maybe we could throw in JWP as part of the deal. I’m sure JWP and Flynn Downes would make a pretty good midfield duo for the championship.

  • Richie says:

Send JWP and 20mil for Him

  • Sue says:

Fernandes and Gueye would end a perfect transfer window
    We must get in quick

  • Munky says:

We’ve paid Southampton 60m quid for Cornet, Downes and JWP. Think they owe us a hefty discount on the next one.

    • Lee says:

We didnt pay Southampton anything for Downes or Cornet.Cornet went on loan from us to them and Downes joined them from us.But good try

      • X says:

We paid £12 million for Flynn Downes in July 2022
And 17.5 million for Maxwell Cornet in August 2022
And paid Ā£30 million for JWP in August 2023. Added up that comes to just short of … oh Ā£60 million. Nice try but Munky was correct.
