West Ham’s on-loan winger Maxwel Cornet is experiencing a mixed spell following his January move from Southampton to Serie A side Genoa.

The £17 million West Ham signing started the season on loan at the Saints, but after failing to make an impact on the south coast, his loan deal was terminated by mutual consent.

A top London Stadium source told Claret & Hugh that the club sought an alternative destination where the winger could get game time and potentially increase his transfer value.

Genoa emerged as the preferred choice, agreeing to give him playing opportunities. They have stuck to their word, introducing the Ivorian as a substitute against Monza and more recently starting him against Fiorentina.

Initially, he made a promising start in Italy, featuring on the right wing under former Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira. Despite only playing 35 minutes as a substitute, he registered an assist in a 2-0 win that lifted Genoa to 12th in Serie A.

That performance earned him a start in the following match against Fiorentina, but Genoa lost 2-1, with Cornet substituted at half-time.

Once again deployed on the right wing, he struggled to impress, missing a great chance from 10 yards before being replaced at the break.

It’s still early days for the winger, who is already getting more minutes than he did at Southampton, but he’ll need to improve significantly if West Ham are to recover any of the £17 million spent on him

Most of the football stats sites now only value Cornet at €8 million (£6.6 million) so we are never going to recover anything like the £17 million plus wages which Moyes signed him for in 2022. Not sure where it all went wrong as he played for Lyon and in the Champions League before joining Burnley where he scored 9 times in 28 appearances.

Surprised to see him on the right wing at Genoa for Viera as he is far more effective on the left. Hope he rediscovers his form as he clearly has no future at West Ham, and if we can get anything like the £6 million then that has to be the best outcome for both player and club.

Usual clickbait headlines. How you can say he is struggling after just two games in which he made an assist in one is beyond me?

So how many so called top level coaches are in fact total idiots ?

  • Ian Coles says:

On the few occasions he played on the right wing at West Ham he struggled. Vierra clearly hasn’t done his homework.

This player is far more effective on the left wing.
