West Ham lure rising star with Hoops to Hammers switch

West Ham have tempted Celtic wonderkid Daniel Cummings with the promise of Premier League football after the teenager’s limited first-team opportunities under Brendan Rodgers.

The The Daily Record has reported that the highly-rated 18-year-old, who has made just one senior appearance, is frustrated by stalled contract talks at Parkhead. As a result, West Ham have swooped in with the offer of first-team football, persuading the player to turn his back on potential Champions League action.

Bhoys manager Brendan Rodgers is said to be fuming at the strikers refusal to sign a new deal, particularly after including him in Celtic’s European squad.

Although a £500,000 January transfer move fell through, West Ham could still secure Cummings on a pre-contract deal for a summer switch, leaving Celtic with only training compensation. The young forward, who has averaged nearly a goal per game this season, was lined up for a Hammers medical this week.

A top West Ham source confirmed to Claret & Hugh that the Hammers were working to sign the player, with Mark Noble leading the transfer efforts.

Cummings is expected to sign his pre-contract with West Ham in the coming days. However, it remains unclear who at the club has promised the youngster a shot at first-team football. Presumably, Graham Potter has played a key role in convincing the Celtic striker to make the switch from Hoops to Hammers, as it certainly feels like a significant coup

No Player should ever get a guarantee of First team football that is something you have to earn through hard work and keeping your levels up otherwise players just go through the motions with no consequences.

Think the promise is ‘if you’re good enough, we have a place for you in the first team. You’re not being signed to make up our reserves.’

      No unconditional guarantees.

Seriously Gonzo, he could not possibly be given a guarantee of Premier League football when he has only had one senior appearance lasting 17 minutes!
Yesterday Martin wrote “probably he’ll go into the under 21 squad, so don’t hold your breath that you’ll be seeing him on your TV or in person at the London Stadium any time next season – he is a future prospect, not a first team player in the making any time soon”.

He has scored 22 goals in the Scottish Youth League for goodness sake. It’s a million miles from Premier League standards We are paying £500,000 and we need to be honest with these kids, look at Guilherme the next “wonderkid” and given only 3 minutes on Saturday! Exactly the same was said about him being a future prospect and so far he’s only been given 58 minutes on the pitch. Good luck to the kid but don’t make promises that can’t possibly be kept.

The ‘news’ on here has stated more than once that he’d signed already! The latest updated that he was due for a medical.
This clearly isn’t the case then? The news would apoear to be that there is no news. This was the situation at the close of the transfer window.

Just how many “wonderkids” are there in the world?

    • Essexiron42 says:

34 articles on C&H at the last count with “wonderkid” in the headline! The hype and expectation placed on these kids is ridiculous and the writers need to help manage this.

  • John Ayris says:

He’s a prospect but just imagine what the level of Scottish B team football is like. It has to be kept in perspective.

  • Enattendanthector says:

The reason he has not had first team opportunities is because he is not ready/good enough at the moment.

  • Taffyhammer says:

Same promise they make to all players before they sign?
