Edson Álvarez has been linked with a transfer away from West Ham on the very same day he was named in Mexico’s provisional 55-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Alvarez spent the season on loan at Fenerbahçe, making only a handful of appearances after suffering an injury shortly after arriving in Turkey.
The West Ham defensive midfielder moved reluctantly in the summer following personal assurances over game time from then-head coach José Mourinho.
Unfortunately for Alvarez, Mourinho departed Fenerbahce not long afterwards and it wasn’t too long before the Mexican midfielder himself was ruled out for a significant chunk of the season.
Ajax Return Rumours Emerge
Now Alvarez has been linked with a return to former club Ajax, the same side West Ham paid £34m to sign him from following the departure of Declan Rice.
Alvarez was no longer considered part of the long-term picture under former West Ham boss Graham Potter and was understood to be part of the senior leadership group which Vladimír Coufal hinted earlier this week Potter was keen to break up.
Would Nuno Have Used Alvarez Differently?
One does wonder whether Nuno Espírito Santo may have found a use for the Mexico international had Alvarez remained at the London Stadium long enough to work under him.
Claret & Hugh have reached out to Alvarez’s English representatives to discover whether there is any realistic possibility of the midfielder returning to England.
