West Ham Miss Out on Marco Silva Over £8m Fee

West Ham United reportedly approached Fulham for manager Marco Silva to take over from Julen Lopetegui.

Earlier today, C&H broke the news that the Hammers had a contingency plan should a move for Graham Potter fall through. We told you that Paulo Fonseca had been interviewed by David Sullivan last Friday but now it has been disclosed that Silva was also on the Irons hit-list.

The revelation came from Hammers ITK ExWHUEmployee, who claims the West Ham board were deterred by the £8m compensation package required to release the Portuguese coach from his Craven Cottage contract.

This news will come as a bitter blow to fans, considering Silva has Fulham flying high and playing an exciting, swashbuckling brand of football this season.

While the £8m fee might seem steep, it pales in comparison to the sums the club regularly spends on transfer fees, loan deals, and agents’ payments.

If West Ham are serious about progressing, those responsible for managerial appointments must stop treating the head coach role as a budget option. True ambition requires significant investment in coaching as well as playing staff.

Although Claret & Hugh have not received confirmation of any approach for Silva, if the rumours are accurate, it’s disheartening to think the club turned down a quality manager for less than the cost of a Jordan Hugill.

Why would he even want to leave Fulham to go to that Joke Club. It would be at least a sideways move if not a downgrade.

  • Sam says:

Yet more lies from the guy that knows nothing!

It’s just obviously made up at tjisnpoint

  • Doubtful says:

Silva would be crazy to leave Fulham for West Ham atm. He can get a top job at some point soon. Why risk it for a moderate pay rise and going south of the river…?

  • Hints says:

Why the hell would Silva go to Wet Spam from Fulham? Maybe back in 1975, but not now get real.

  • Mr_Itchy says:

Could be the £8 million or it could just be that Silva doesn’t want to go to West Ham . His agent would have been sounded out before any approach made .

  • Grizzler says:

Your so full of boring sh**e.

  • MJ says:

Let’s be honest what manager that isn’t desperate will want to work for David Sullivan. He’s the Gerald Ratner of football owners. If Potter chooses Everton who could blame him

  • fFC forever says:

You are arrogantly presupposing he would want to go to West Ham. He is building something at Fulham and, in any event, FFC would not let him go in January

  • Ted says:

Like Marco Silva is going to leave Fulham for an inferior club.

    • Not A Circus F.C. says:

Inferior? What have Fulham ever done besides be in the shadow of Chelsea?

      • Bam-Bam says:

They’re doing a lot better than us, why the feck would he want to come our shit shambles of club! Refusing to spend a bit more to get someone decent is the Westham way!

  • John says:

Iraola doing better at Bournemouth. Factor out luck and expected goals predicts they’d be THIRD right now.

  • Paul Basnett says:

This shambles is so embarrassing. So like the debacle with Avram Grant and Martin O’Neill in January 2011. Just so unprofessional and amateur and unfair on the individuals involved and the fans. These situations need decisive quick action to calm the storm around the club not this dithering, leaking and nothing actually happening making it all worse.

  • Timbo says:

This was never going to happen. If we can get Potter or Fonseca on an initial 6 mths then I think that makes sense all round. Just get a move on about it so they can assess the squad properly before the window shuts.

  • ExPatHammer says:

At an estimated 3million of prize money per league position – bump us up three spots (or prevent a loss of 3 spots) and that 8mil is paid for…

  • John Ayris says:

Are managers contracts subject to amortisation in the same way that players are ? If not that may explain the reluctance tp pay for a manager.

  • Ray Stewart’s Right Peg says:

The way this is going we’ll end up with Steve Cooper. About time fans start sounding protests against Sullivan.

  • Val says:

If we are only ever going to look at managers that are un-attached, then always going to end up with the dregs ! The reason other managers have jobs, is because they are doing the business week in/week out. Just pay the money to Boro & get Michael Carrick. Also while we ordering taxis for JLO, can we also get one for Sullivan. This was your useless pick, when you decided to get rid of Moyes, so you can swallow the cost of a new manager for your mistake. You are both to blame for this absolute mess we are in !

  • Beyond caring now says:

The question is why would Silva want to leave Fulham where he’s got a decant squad and playing decant football to come to this team and work under Sullivan ???
The way this managerial saga has been played out in the public is an absolute shambles and embarrassment which sums Sullivan up entirely. I bet Potter turns us down now anyway and ends up at Everton…….
We will never be the club that we should be as long as Sullivan is running things.
    We are a joke club

  • JB15 says:

Irrespective of whether Silva is the right man for the job, the fact that we consider £8m too much, yet will spend £20m on Danny Ings (and put him on £125k a week!), £7m on a Kalvin Phillips LOAN deal, £40m on Kilman, £25m on Guilherme…

But no… we couldn’t possibly see the value in spending £8m on the most important person in the team.

Sullivan is a pathetic excuse of a chairman. Genuinely pathetic. Absolutely insane logic by the poisonous little dwarf.

We will never progress as a club whilst we have such short sighted idiots in charge.

I’m no David Moyes fan by any means and wanted him to leave at the end, but massive respect to him for actually achieving something whilst being managed by the bunch of clowns we have as a board. God knows what he must have had to put up with.

  • Y Street says:

Another slips by for the sake of a few million, ( yes, a lot to most of us, but in footballing terms these days…..?), how many more times??🤦🏻‍♀️😡⚒️

  • Ted says:

    Complete bs
    Your making this shit up

  • Ted says:

    What a load of bs
His under contract so would obviously have a buy out clause
