West Ham optimism has gone

David-Moyes-1147952I am West Ham optimist usually but I have yet to see a team under David Moyes that is truly up for a relegation fight and will play for the manager and the badge. Sure there are some individuals who bleed Claret and Blue and will put in blood, sweat and tears into their performances, we don’t need to name them, we know who they are.

My concern is the others and it worries me how many of them have relegation clauses written into their contracts meaning they can just walk away as free agents if we get relegated. I also worry that David Moyes has been given just a six-month contract to prove himself. What does that message say to the players and what loyalty does that guarantee of him when the summer comes.

I want to become a West Ham optimist again but until I witness a string of results and more importantly a win I remain sceptical and nervous.

I hope Moyes and the team prove me wrong on Wednesday night and turn over Everton!

  1. What a strange article, both in terms of timing and sentiment.

  2. Your worries it seems are limitless, did you not attend the game v Leicester ?, did you not see the improvement in terms of fitness, desire, a will to push on ?.
I know it is going to be a hard long struggle, the 3 games after the Everton match will in most Peoples eyes see us end up with no points.
However, I think that Moyes is the right man at the right time for us, he was obviously happy to sign a six month contract, so why should you be worried about it ?

  3. Give us some doom and gloom why don’t you

  4. It sounds like you wrote that in the depths of depression. Too many bottles of gin last night?

If the owners only gave him a six month contract, or inserted a six month cancellation clause, then Moyes owes us no loyalty and we have no right to expect any. The owners have essentially told him that they are making no firm commitment to him, so he can’t be expected to commit to us.

  5. Hang on a mo – £2m bonus payment if Moyes keeps us up, and his contract has a six month review but can run for a further two years. Had the owners given him a straight two and a half year deal we would have hung them, so for once they got something right here.
Sean has every right to say what he said too. Yes there was an improvement against Leicester but Moyes has one point from two games so far and that’s no better an average than Slav, in fact it’s worse. With the run of games we’ve got over December, the improvement needs to be huge if we don’t want to be at risk of being cast adrift come the new year.
And if that happens, we won’t be attracting any decent players in the Jan window.
As for some players having relegation releases in their contracts, good! Stay up or go down, we need a huge clear out so we can bring the average age down and bring in runners.

    • I wasn’t criticising the owners for the short term features of the contract, just pointing out that if you make it short term, you can’t expect Moyes to make a long term commitment himself and you also have to accept the inevitable impact on the players that goes with it.

      • Moyes has said he is looking long term here & I’m seeing positives.
The one thing that does worry me about his contract is getting players to come in Jan.
But I think we can still get good players who want to play in PL & London

  6. I think more ice and less Whiskey needed. A blog to commit suicide to …. just what we need at the moment … It is not all bad … Noble is no more … please God …. COYI

  7. Please enlighten us as to which players have a “relegation clause” in their contracts.

  8. How can you judge after only 2 games? This is still the same group of players that were crap under Bilic, just because he has gone the players wont change overnight into title contenders. What were peiple expecting? Suddenly start winning games 4-0?
Since the Leicester game there has been some positive attitudes & hope again. Now the day of another important game & it’s back to we’re sh1t & we have no hope!

  9. David Moyes has an agenda to rebuild his reputation in the Premiership . I sincerely hope he does because he will be taking us with him . He is on a short term trial period of six months and said he was happy with that and hopes to extend it . An extra bonus payment of £2m for keeping us up is nothing to be sniffed at . We are showing signs of improvement and the commitment is there for all to see . Considering the mess Bilic left behind it’s no wonder we are where we are . Last nights results went somewhat in our favour so let’s be optimistic and believe we can take advantage . All the doom & gloom , Sean seems to be at the bottom of whatever glass you were staring into . Cheer up , better times are coming .
A win tonight would give give everyone a huge lift in moral , including those nameless ones on relegation clauses . Having watched the Leicester game I don’t have a clue who they might be …. maybe you can tell us .

  10. exactly, what are peoples’ realistic criteria at the moment? i have seen 2 performances under a new manager who seems to have a set formation, plays players in the right positions, a clear set of tactics, the players able to keep going till 90 minutes and not die after 60 (against leicester only) and most importantly, an improvement in terms of performances on the pitch itself, albeit minimal. we are taking throw ons quicker, directing goal kicks properly, playing with a bit more discipline, working it out to wide positions, etc. all things we seemed to have completely forgotten how to do. i even saw someone turn and run in behind a full back against leicester, allowing us to stretch play for the first time in 15 months. i’d guess this might be the most optimistic i’ve been about a result for about a year. that might all be blown apart a bit after tonight, but why live like that?

  11. Well done Sean just what we need a good shot in the arm before a crunch game….. article verging on irresponsible.

  12. What a strangely introspective and pointless article. ‘I had a smoked salmon baigel for breakfast this morning. Hope it’s not too cold today…’

  13. There is no way you are a West Ham optimist if you start with “… I have yet to see a team under David Moyes that is truly up for a relegation fight…”
He has had two games, taken over a squad with zero confidence and any idea how to play. The noise the other night at the stadium is arguably the noiseist it has been. We have more shape than we have had in ages and actually look like we have a plan to score and not concede. We were unlucky V a very good Watford side and despite Leicester manager Puel claiming they should of won, they hardly had a shot all game.

Plenty of reasons to be positive under Moyes.
He has a high % win ratio at Neverton. Better structure. Concede less goals. Create more chances than opponents. (Almost kept Sunderland up that had a far weaker team/squad than us) He has not had his best players available to him either. Collins, Fonte, Antonio, Little Pea.

  14. Cheer up Sean, you’ve got to feel more optimistic after Friday’s match – the problem I feel is how poor our midfield is but if they can get Kouyate to be more disciplined and controlled it would help. There’s more options up front than previously so maybe they can leave Carroll out of the starting team and bring him on at the end of games when the opposition is tiring.

Anyway, I’d remove all sharp objects from your reach and keep taking your tablets!

  15. Garbage article! The reason I rarely read this site any longer. This crap sounds like it was written to insight follow up comments to the contrary. Always trying to keep traffic on the are ya? Even if you **** off your readers. Toilet job..!

  16. If it was written to get clickbait or not Sean is welcome to his opinion, I have seen improvements in both games, despite being highly critical of him before his appointment so far for me Moyes has been a breath of fresh air, the players look sharper, they are stringing more passes together and are defensively more solid than at any point beyond the honeymoon period of Slav, it is very early days and irrespective of the result tonight or in the coming 4 games, we have to give Moyes time has has had about 3 weeks and only just over 1 with most of the squad, his name is David not Jesus 😀

  17. Moyes is growing on me. Have def seen improvement. Arnie is defending.. Dropped Noble.
Relegation period would be bad for us w the LS and the quality in the Championship now.
I don’t think Moye’s contract is the best but he has already said he is looking towards long term here.
The main thing that worries me about his contract is getting players to come in January. But if he is confident then we can get in good players we don’t need world beaters we need hard workering players & creator.

  18. Strange timing of a strange article… I,m a lot more optimistic now than before the Leicester game ..Moyes is growing on me and I think he will get it right given time ..we need to score first tonight ..no better time to play Everton.. Coyi

  19. We are so poor it’s embarrassing. To go 45 mins without a shot at goal, I fear for us on Sunday v City, the way they are playing and the way we are playing they could get double figures.

  20. 4-0 Sean !! 😉
