West Ham see off competition for starlet

West Ham see off competition for starlet by Gonzo

Much has been made of the West Ham team who beat Arsenal to with the FA Youth Cup last season. However, there is a player in the age group just below, who has also caught my attention recently.

The name Daniel Rigge is perhaps not as illustrious as Mubama, Marshall, Casey, Orford, Earthy and the rest. But he is just as prodigiously talented.

Rigge is a beautifully balanced attacking midfielder blessed with close control, quick feet and an eye for goal. I first saw him when coming on as a substitute last season and have kept a lookout out for him ever since.

So I was absolutely delighted to read an article on the West Ham Way today, written by my chum Mark Carlaw. Mark was reporting on a tip-off from ExWHUEmployee which suggested Rigge is close to signing a long-term contract with the Hammers.

This is outstanding news for the club, following the recent contract extensions of both Callum Marshall and George Earthy. Rigge is highly sought after by a number of prestigious clubs, so this news is most welcome.

The club currently have an outstanding crop of young talent. All that is now required, is for David Moyes to give them a chance. I’m not suggesting wholesale change, after all, West Ham have some fine senior players. But a pathway and opportunity has to be created for these young players.

Congratulation’s to everyone at the Academy and to Daniel himself.
