West Ham United are making a bold statement in this summer’s transfer window, with Hull City’s Jaden Philogene (23) emerging as a new target, according to a report from TEAMtalk. This move signifies a significant shift in tactics under new manager Julen Lopetegui, who is prioritising a possession-based style of play.

West Ham’s appointment of Lopetegui has ushered in a new era at the London Stadium. The former Spanish national team coach is known for his emphasis on ball control and intricate passing. To execute this philosophy effectively, West Ham needs players who can thrive in a possession-dominant system. Jaden Philogene fits the bill perfectly.

Philogene, a 23-year-old attacking midfielder, impressed last season in the Championship with Hull City, notching 12 goals and contributing 6 assists. His attacking flair and ability to fulfill the homegrown player quota make him an attractive prospect for West Ham.

West Ham aren’t alone in their pursuit of Philogene. Newly promoted Premier League side Southampton are also reportedly interested in acquiring his services. While Tottenham Hotspur’s earlier interest appears to have cooled, competition remains fierce.

Further complicating matters is Hull City owner Acun Ilicali’s public valuation of Philogene at €30 million. Ilicali has no intention of letting go of his key player cheaply, especially as he harbours ambitions of securing promotion back to the Premier League with Hull City.

West Ham faces a daunting task in convincing Hull City to part ways with Philogene. Ilicali’s stance and Hull City’s promotion aspirations create a challenging negotiation landscape. However, Financial Fair Play regulations in the Championship are stricter compared to the Premier League. This might present an opportunity for West Ham, with a substantial offer, possibly around £30 million, potentially swaying the deal in their favour.

West Ham’s pursuit of Philogene underscores their commitment to adapting to Lopetegui’s possession-based approach. Whether they can secure his signature amidst competition and Hull City’s high asking price remains to be seen.

Embarrassing if we’ve only offered £25m for Kilman oh what a surprise it’s been rejected! It seems to take forever for a player to leave (Trott) and ever longer for a player to join (Fordingham). It’s going to be an excruciating long window despite a change of manger, it seems.

So Ilicali values Philogene at 30m euros and you think we should offer £30m. Duh!

When are we going to make our real first signing?
