West Ham United are set to part ways with Nuno Espírito Santo, with his exit potentially happening as early as this evening.
Claret & Hugh spoke to a source close to the club within the last 20 minutes who said:
“I told you last week, if West Ham are relegated they’ll sack him one million percent.”
Espírito Santo has a clause in his contract allowing West Ham to terminate his employment in the event of relegation from the Premier League, and the club now appear ready to exercise that option.
It should also be said that Nuno himself has little interest in remaining at the London Stadium following the drop into the Championship. His agent Jorge Mendes is understood to be confident of securing another Premier League role for the Portuguese coach once vacancies begin to appear.
Nuno Exit Looks Inevitable
Ultimately, Espírito Santo simply hasn’t done enough to keep West Ham in the Premier League despite replacing Graham Potter very early in the campaign.
The Hammers showed occasional signs of improvement under the former Wolves and Spurs boss, but the reality is the results were nowhere near consistent enough to avoid disaster.
No doubt those at the top of the club will also hope that removing the manager takes at least some of the immediate pressure off the board following relegation.
Because whilst Nuno will carry responsibility for the failure, supporters made their feelings crystal clear yesterday regarding where much of the blame truly lies.
David Sullivan has now overseen West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League for a second time during his ownership of the football club.
“Honesty, Transparency And Rebuild”
In a statement released yesterday, West Ham said:
“We must now face the consequences of that failure with honesty, transparency and a determination to repair, refocus and rebuild.”
Quite how much honesty and transparency supporters feel they are getting at the moment is probably open to debate.
But the dismissal of Espírito Santo appears set to become the first major move in what will be an incredibly difficult rebuild ahead of a Championship campaign very few at the top of the club ever truly believed possible.
On the plus side, Pep’s out a job and he was showing his support with a “Come on you Irons!” the other day so it’s obvious he sees West Ham as his ideal next destination.
In other completely true news, David Sullivan is doing a fantastic job and Nuno… nah, can’t do it.
But yeah, we need a gutting from top to bottom. As for a manager, wonder if Bellamy would fancy doing double duty at club and international level Championship/Football Manager style? If not, pay Wales some money and bring him in as he could be interested as he’s spoke of having a great fondness for the club.
He seems to try having Wales play with a high press and passing game so with his personality and tactics, he could be a popular appointment. Especially if it works.

If I’d been Sullivan after Moyes went I’d have tried to get Michael Carrick.
I didn’t think post Moyes that anyone was going to come close to the win percentages we had under Moyes. Championship will be different. Scotty Parker for next manager?
For me the question is not whether to remove NES but who are you replacing him with? That manager must be of a higher quality and have potential as well. For me now, you have to get a very good manager and get the funds and ensure his availability. If he is available now, ok, if not then keep NES until he becomes available.
We need a manager to improve the current team, integrate youngsters, put the team in the top half of the Championship. Possibly get promotion, but I think there will be too many player/coach/manager changes for that to come together in time to bounce back – hope I am wrong. Depends on manager and if they keep key players such as Fernandes, somebody which a Championship club cannot replace, just like others. Let go good players, but not those you cannot replace as a C. club. That has to be part of the selection process – AWB is an example. A very good RB, not consistently good and is replaceable – he goes.
Whoever is manager has to build a new team, get promoted (1st season only IF you keep key players and manager is good enough) AND then keep WHU in the PL after promotion. This is what you want, what the club needs.
If the insider says NES leaves, that is 1/5 of what we want to know.
Nuno definitely deserves better and to be given the opportunity to bring us back up, to bring in more of his own coaching team rather than relying on u21 coaches. He brought wolves up with 99 points then had top 7 finish. Carrick hasn’t been a success just him at Man Utd it’s his whole coaching staff which includes Steve Holland who is one of the best coaches in the Country.
Given his Championship and premiership experience, the only reason to sack him is to be able to avoid tough conversations about economics of keeping players and recruitment to come back up.
Get a new manager in and you make them beholden to a fire sale at the outset.
It is about Sullivan reasserting economic authority again based on the new situation.
If he was a proper leader, he would see better to worth with Nuno and rebuild. But he probably won’t as he is an insecure idiot
This is Sullivans fault. From the point it was clear that Moyes should / would go he flunked every decision.
Lopetegui wrong manager backed with far too much money signing too many terrible players
Keeping him on too long then appointing Potter. Then not only not giving him any serious funding but insisting on selling to buy.
Then keeping Potter too long and not backing NES enough.
NES made a basket case club competitive but destroyed the opportunity he created with mad team tinkering. The full backs on the wrong sides, losing games by trying to defend leads (especially using Kilman). Finally finding the best team for the paper thin squad and changing it so badly for the Newcastle game.
NES is a really good manager I reckon with a strong squad but we didn’t have that and definitely won’t now. The prospect of Sullivan mucking up every decision yet again is almost too much to bear.
How does s Kretinsky and Co just accept the rank amateur club management?
I dont want to keep him either. He has enough time to keep us up and didnt. The most important (and first )hire should be sullivan replacing himself as chairman.

Get rid made some poor decisions apart from the ones already mentioned, 2 up at Bournemouth sat back second half and ended 2-2, 2 up at Chelsea and done the same thing and we lost 3-2 and still continued to repeat this mistake time and time again
Kept picking the useless Paqueta had he left him out and moved Fernades forward earlier things may have turned around quicker, and don’t mention the Newcastle disaster

You can sack any manager you want but until Sullivan is removed and proper football people installed nothing will change……so expect Parker or any other manager who is available for £0 to be employed.
When many may be thinking lets get Bellamy i fear there is little chance of that happening as that would involve seven hundred thousand pounds in compensation to the Welsh FA and we all no how that goes don’t we.
Gonzo I think the club is about to disappear down a large dark hole which will be very difficult to get itself out of. The Championship is a long hard season, no small squads will get out of there easily. Three things have to happen in the next couple of weeks if we have any chance at all.
1 if Nuno is not fully committed get rid of him, get in a new manager with the right credentials and have his backroom staff sorted .
2 get in someone who is in charge of player sales and buying players. I personally don’t want Sulivan at the club at all but if this is done it’s better than what we have had. Sulivan will ofcouse want some control so setting out parameters at the start is crucial, including money available, how much sales must make to keep in with the rules. This includes how much the board is going to put in. EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE CLEAR FROM THE START TO WHOEVER DOES THIS IMPORTANT ROLE!
3 talk to players find out those who would be committed to one season to get us back in the Premiership, sell those who would just be a problem, but never sell cheap!
Without these we will be lucky to survive another relegation I fear.

We need to get a new manager installed so we can start selling and recruiting ready for the start of season. Need signings in now.
Do not want all summer of who we are going to sign and never do.
Perhaps if we had been more ambitious last year in players we were linked with before we crashed we would have not been left with this bad situation.

I cannot see any premiership club giving Nuno a contract.
The last few managers have not been good enough, that rests with the board as they appointed them.
We need consistency to build a squad and playing style, changing managers brings changes in style and players which at present is that we have a group of players who were brought in to play in different set-ups.
Loopy was a disaster, Potter was impersonating a manager, and Nuno had his flaws, playing Killman, swapping defenders around, 5 five at the back when we needed to win and what is the deal with Pablo when we needed goals not a jogger.
Every team that plays us at the Westfield stadium next season will be up for it, we need leaders all over the pitch
Wonder whether Everton will appoint Nuno, he is more capable than Moyes of delivering top 6 form.
Wish Nuno well if he goes might have been a few questionable decisions but his results were outstanding from the position we were in.
Am not confident about Parker at all, the team needs lifting and he isn’t that guy, we need a coach like Iraola or Jemez that will improve the players and give us a new identity.
Classic narcissistic behaviour when you do something wrong make another the scapegoat and sack them. Look at UK under Bojo, US under Trump for 10’s of examples or any big corporate they refuse to accept they are accountable and it’s always someone else to blame.
Bad news for any of us that hoped Sullivan would leave, if he doesn’t leave will have to question whether to support anything that puts a pound in his grubby pocket.
