West Ham have sealed the signing of Northern Ireland Under-17 international Joel Kerr in a move that continues the club’s growing focus on youth recruitment in the area.

The highly rated 16-year-old joins from Glentoran, penning a long-term deal with the Hammers that runs until 2028. Kerr, one of the brightest young prospects to come out of Northern Ireland in recent years, will relocate to London this summer.

Originally from The Rock in County Tyrone, the left-footed attacker has attracted attention from several top clubs across the UK and Europe thanks to his technical ability, pace, and versatility. Though primarily a winger, Kerr has featured as a striker, a number ten, and even filled in at left-back for Glentoran’s Reserves this season.

Andy Mathieson, Glentoran’s Head of Player Development, spoke proudly of the young talent’s rise through the ranks:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for a young player who has shown exceptional dedication, maturity and talent throughout his time in the Glentoran Academy… Joel stood out from an early age and combined natural footballing quality with an outstanding attitude.”

He added that Kerr’s move is a major endorsement of Glentoran’s youth system, underlining their reputation for developing players ready to step into the professional game.

West Ham will hope that Kerr continues to flourish in East London, where the club has already dipped it’s toe into the Northern Irish market on several occasions.

Another one that will disappear into oblivion

Johnny Ayris was a “wonderkid” ( according to Ron Greenwood and others) I ended up playing against him in the Essex leagues. Thats how far he fell.

Ade Coker, Stuart Slater, Freddie Sears all hyped too early. Joe Cole was one that made it to the top of the game but even he was hardly a “wonderkid”.

So much sensationalist writing on web sites and media as they compete for our attention. Legalised lying half of it and most stretch the truth to the limit. Clickbait I suppose. Lets hope this kid at least makes the first team but odds are he wont.

    And a long-term deal? 3 years. Chelsea sign them for 8 – that’s long-term.

I make it at least 6 Irish wonderkids now in our academy. If they all make it we’ll have half the Northern Ireland international team playing for West Ham.

  • J says:

Yet another Wonderkid. Interesting that we’ve continued David Moyes fascination with players from Northern Ireland though despite Moyes no longer being at the club.

  • Jay says:

If you are going to paint every young player we sign as a ‘Wonderkid’ the term loses all meaning. Like the term ‘legend’.

The 16 year old who set the world alight playing for Spain at the Euros is a Wonderkid. With all due respect to this Irish lad he’s been playing for Glentoran reserves. No need to put pressure on him by labelling him a Wonderkid.
