Spanish reports that it will be up new West Ham head coach Graham Potter to decide whether to recall Nayef Aguerd from Real Sociedad are wide of the mark.
West Ham does not have such an option and will not be able to recall the central defender unless both clubs decide to terminate the season-long loan contract.
Speaking exclusively to Claret and Hugh this morning a club source told us “SADLY we don’t as the previous manager didn’t fancy him. I wish we did”
Aguerd joined the Hammers from French club Stade Rennais for £30m under David Moyes in 2022 on a five-year contract.
The loan to the Spanish club is believed to include an option, but not an obligation, to buy, with the Hammers receiving a £2m loan payment.
Graham Potter will have a decision to make at the end of June when the loan deal with Real Sociedad expires.
Aguerd has put in a string of impressive performances since joining Sociedad which has alerted a number of clubs. Rumours have persisted in La Liga that a potential transfer to either Real Madrid or Barcelona could be on the cards.
The player himself has let it be known that he is monitoring West Ham’s progress under new boss Potter with a view to a return.
Nobody complained when Lopetegui got rid of Aguerd.
Take off the wages we aren’t paying him too John. And frankly his value was depreciating far more with us than it has since he shifted to Spain. So not all bad.
Surely the loan fee is more than £2M, the amortisation is £6M per year. At that rate it costs us to loan him out.
