West Ham United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been called up to the Democratic Republic of Congo national team for their upcoming international friendlies in June—and it appears the player and Congolese FA couldn’t be happier.
The 27-year-old’s call-up to the senior squad is a first, was always on the cards given his Congolese roots and recent England snub. Wan-Bissaka previously represented DR Congo’s U20 side back in 2015 but later opted to play for England at youth levels.
His decision to join DR Congo’s senior setup comes after being overlooked by Tomas Tuchel for England’s latest squad—a surprise omission given the right-back’s outstanding form for West Ham this season. Wan-Bissaka has been nothing short of exceptional since his £17 million move from Manchester United, emerging as a Hammer of the Year frontrunner with a series of standout performances.
Having seemingly been cast aside by England, Wan-Bissaka now has the chance to shine on the international stage for DR Congo, and I doubt a single Irons fan will blame him but it does seem very much the Three Lions loss is Congo’s gain.
Same happened to our reggae boy after England ignored him. Shame that England have ignored Aaron.
Still, good luck to him.

Fair play to him he is a very good wing back and a defender and anyway why would you want to play for ENGLAND now we have a German coach which I think is diabolical !!!!
He should be nailed on for England. Shame he will have extra travel and potentially AFCON commitments which may impact on his fitness for us.
Congrats AWB!
Cheers Tuchel. Now we lose him for the African Cup of Nations next year, plus all the extra travelling for qualifiers. On the plus side it means the club will need to ensure his position is covered.
Good luck to him.
