Post Gonzo’s article yesterday on Jonathan David, it has been reported that West Ham are maintaining contact with the players agent and are keen to finalise a pre-contract deal.
David made his professional debut for Gent in 2018 where he scored 30 goals in 60 league appearances before joining Lille in 2020 for €30m, making him the most expensive Canadian transfer to date. He went onto win a Ligue 1 title and net 83 goals in 166 appearances.
Interestingly, in the summer of 2024, according to the Sun, West Ham allegedly agreed a £30m transfer fee with the French club, only for the deal to fall through after his agents reportedly demanded £10m in commission.
David, speaking to Onze Mondial has said he wants to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world and won’t make a decision until the summer, so it’s unlikely that the London club will be able to able to persuade him to join – yet that’s not stopped negotiations taking place between West Ham and the players representatives.
If we offered him a massive signing fee and £250k a week, I still don’t think he’d come to us.
He will want to compete at the top level. That means Champions League football. We just cannot offer that. We are a million miles away from that right now
Offer him £5m a year lump sum west for every season he starts and £150k a week salary then. Reality is David is 24 West Ham may win a cup if we are lucky but won’t win much else for the next 10 years, if he wants to win things he will take other options and nearly every club in Europe will be trying to sign him. I would give us a 1% chance of making this happen.
Look at our league position and. That will tell us all we need to know regarding further recruitment
He’d have to be off his chump to come here given the choices he will have. The bad running of the club has made us table proppers…
