West Ham have spent much of the summer chasing two of Liverpool’s rising stars, as the Merseysiders look to recoup funds after a busy transfer window.
Tyler Morton is now out of reach, with the midfielder switching to Ligue 1. That’s no major concern for the Hammers, who seem intent on giving Freddie Potts a real chance to step up this season.
However, hopes had remained high among fans that West Ham might still land Harvey Elliott. The England U21 star has been linked with a £40m move to the London Stadium for several weeks.
While speculation cooled once it appeared Lucas Paquetá might remain in East London, Elliott was still seen as a key target—especially with Liverpool reportedly open to sales as they reshape their squad under Arne Slot.
Elliott, 22, struggled for consistent minutes last season and, despite initially being willing to play a rotational role, is now actively looking for a move that would guarantee him regular starts.

Liverpool have sold Morton & Elliott is unlikely to join West Ham
According to the German media, RB Leipzig are pushing hard to sign him and have already held talks with Elliott. The winger has reportedly spoken directly with Leipzig boss Ole Werner and managing director Marcel Schäfer. Negotiations between the clubs are said to be ongoing.
Despite much badge kissing and declaring his love for Liverpool, Elliott recently admitted he’s weighing up his future:
“If I had it my way, I’d stay here for the rest of my career… but I need to be selfish and think about what’s best for me. I want to be in the World Cup squad.”
In truth, it’s starting to feel like another near miss for West Ham—and a disappointing one at that. For many fans, Elliott was their top choice signing.
Amazing how being young and in the Liverpool squad attracts such a high premium. Chelsea are getting good as well at this idea that their benchwarmers are worth lots of money. Be data driven, look for pearls and then decide ‘Liverpool’ and ‘young’ is all that matters
Hardly a near miss with Sullivan’s involvement. Made enquiries and never went back to Liverpool.
It’s another of his efforts to show he tried. Yeah, tight!!
Teams around us are all strengthening while we dither with our pennies. Lack of investment will cost us. The issue with PSR can be worked around, other clubs do it, but there does not seem to be any enthusiasm from the owners to progress the club.
He was certainly my top choice but Paqueta staying limits our budget and the priority becomes a box to box type player. Just hope he sticks with Potts now and until he signs someone else, pairs him with Soucek, Irving or even Alvarez if he is staying. For me, JWP just a squad player unless he somehow recaptures his form of 2 years ago.
Elliot is a good player. But I wonder where he would fit into Potter’s system. Potter doesn’t play wingers, and I can’t see him displacing Bowen in the role behind the striker or Paqueta in a playmaker role. Seems like a lot of money for a player that wouldn’t be guaranteed to start. We really need a box to box midfielder with pace and aggression. Maybe we should focus on that. But like I said, Elliot is a good player.
Why are West Ham owners not putting in the £90m that would enable us to buy these players, surely that would eventually payoff by having a team higher up the premiership and probably in Europe?
Anyone see the Real Betis v Como friendly? Pablo Fornals throwing a right hook. Maybe it’s time to bring Pablo back home (at a bargain price)
