In what’s been an incredibly busy day of West Ham transfer rumours, it’s now MailOnline’s turn to weigh in with their take on all things Claret & Blue.
Earlier today, Sky Sports and talkSPORT revealed interest in Exequiel Palacios and Raheem Sterling, but The Mail now reports that West Ham are targeting two midfielders.
That’ll be music to the ears of many Hammers fans—including myself—who believe midfield remains a major area of weakness. Why the board have left such an important part of the rebuild this late in the window is anyone’s guess, but perhaps the latest news suggests we’re finally addressing it.
The Mail names Juventus midfielder—and long-time West Ham target—Douglas Luiz as one option, though they also note that his wages may be too high. That’s hardly a shock, especially given the club’s recent push for cheaper signings and free transfers.
Still, if we’ve saved money elsewhere, surely that gives us the flexibility to spend big in midfield where it’s most needed? One would certainly hope the savings made on the wages of players like Danny Ings, Evan Ferguson, Aaron Cresswell and the ridiculously remunerated Carlos Soler would have freed-up significant wages.
Let’s hope these midfield rumours lead to something concrete, because with the new season just days away, time is running out to get it right.

Raheem Sterling …. Says it all
Luiz to Forest
NO more over the hill flops please . Westham’s squad is already filled with unsalable , high wage garbage as a result of Sullivan , Moyes . Steidten and Lopetegui . Westham are undoubtedly the worst in the league with this type of incompetence .
Dont believe a word coming out of W ham anymore News coming out of Liverpool We went in with bids for 2 of there players then everything went motionless for two weeks Then they heard nothing Sums us up dosnt it Would be nice to hear some good positive news coming from our club BUT A LEOPARD NEVER CHANGESS ITS SPOTS DOES IT
Sterling is on £300k a week if we can’t afford Luiz wages we sure as hell can’t Sterling’s plus he’s lost his mojo and not sure he can get it back, similar risk with Luiz am hoping we can work some magic with Fernandes or Palacios they are the kind of players we need, whether we can afford who knows ? Doak from Liverpool seems to have come out of left field he is a bit of a jack in the box possibly a good super sub
It is quite true what everyone is saying about Sullivans
phantom deals
We have lost out to the 2 best players that if we had put down the money , us hammers fans could have been sat here with a smile on our faces looking forward to the new season.
Now we just don’t know who we are going to end up with
There is no sign that Sullivan is going to fork out for a decent midfielder or striker or even a goalkeeper as things stand
No ambition whatsoever
Sold our best player and not looking to sign a class player to fill Kudus boots
Sterling & Luiz forget them not good enough
Ramsey not sure he wants to come
I think we have signed a terrific player in Diouf
But already there is talk he won’t be with us for long
Perhaps he would if we had ambition to build a team with some young hungry players, our youth players are looking good
We’ll sign Mads Hermanson and a midfielder or two but potentially a new defender too now that it’s been decided Casey not quite ready and needs a season out on loan.
Once weve signed Mads Hermanson not Victor who is just a back up red herring, then I think we’ll sign a midfielder. There’s. I way the goalkeeping coach won’t want to be working with his mate Mads Hermanson.
Who’s the 2nd midfield target Gonzo?
Harvey Elliot and James Mcatee would be progressive signings that would appease the west ham faithful ! Come on sully dust off the cheque book now !!!
Why not just pay high wages? Because of the rest of the squad. Should a newcomer earn more than Bowen? Bringing in players on wages outside what you’ve previously told agents and players aren’t in your framework gets you a queue at the manager’s door. Some players may even have clauses about being say ‘the best paid player’ so the knock on effect can be significant.
This window turns on the quality of the midfielders we sign or don’t sign. Midfield is the key area to address because last season it was not at the races.
Douglas Luiz was a big flop at Juventus last season. great passer of the ball but lack of goals, assists, defensive contributions, and costly errors mean they’re having to sell him at a big loss.
I really hope we get a pacey energetic youngish midfielder . Someone who can turn defence into attack and carry the ball forward . Have you seen clips Raphael Onyedika. If Potter wants him we should go for him and back him . This guy looks the real deal . What do I know Gonzo , I’m just a fan like many others our views are not listened to by the board .
Raheem Sterling ffs no way he is over the hill he is on big wages and a total waste of space.
Don’t forget the 100k pw for Antonio, 90k Kudus plus Coufal and Fab’s wages
We shaved £25 million quid off our annual wage bill by releasing players and selling Kudus. That’s huge. If we can get a tune out of some of our dead wood this season and move them on, lord forbid without losing too much on them, we would have a much leaner, well oiled machine. If we need to tread water a bit in the transfer market this summer, but can make some adjustments mid season based on what our requirements are the time, that’s a fair compromise in my opinion.
