According to a Hammers News exclusive, it appears West Ham manager Graham Potter has rejected the chance to sign Callum Wilson. Good on him.
The news follows yesterdayâs Claret & Hugh revelation that Potter has decided against signing a striker at all during this summer window. The report suggests the club were keen to recruit at least two forwardsâone of them being the former Newcastle man.
Quoting a West Ham spokesman, Hammers News reported:
âThe manager does not want a striker, which some feel is wrong,â
âI feel we should sign two.
We expect to sign Callum Wilson, but that might not be enough in my opinion, as he has had injury issues in the past too.â
Pretty explosive stuffâbut if true, Iâm pleased to hear the manager is sticking to his guns.
For too long, West Ham have relied on ageing, over-the-hill players on inflated wages. And as the spokesman admits, Wilson is injury-prone.
While signing a striker would be ideal, itâs important not to force players on the manager. Let him build his squad. Perhaps Potter has decided to go with Niclas FĂźllkrug, Jarrod Bowen, and Calum Marshall as his three primary forwards, while creativity and goals come from elsewhere?
But successive managers seem to have players forced upon them and it’s vital Potter resists. No doubt, if the right striker came along who would fit his system, Potter would take the plunge, however the likes of Wilson and Calvert Lewin should have no part in the future of West Ham if things are going to chance.
West Ham are supposed to be in a period of transition, lowering the average age of the squad. Malick Diouf is a great start. But players like Wilson are exactly what we donât needâand if Potter has pushed back on the deal, thatâs no bad thing.

Sullivan yet again how many times do you make the same mistake. Back Potter properly heâs right to turn Wilson down . You success on the field means success in the Pocket , Mr Sullivan , go figure !
Sullivan, â Heâs a player I wanted to sign for years but you are only allowed two visitors at a time in the hospital and his wife and kid were always there. This is the first time in ages we have had a chance to get him without any injuries so Iâm very happy. Itâs quite possible he could play five, maybe six games for us before he gets injured again and what a bargain. Old, injury prone players whose best days are behind them are the type of players I love.â
Please stop using this terrible AI image of potter. It’s awful
As you say Gonzo, good on him. Outrageous at the way that the Board are trying to throw him under the bus on this issue by suggesting that he doesn’t want to sign a striker. To my mind the most likely scenario is that we can’t afford any of the targets that he had identified and he would rather stick with what he’s got rather than sign a dud.
Wilson sounds like a Sully move to me. He would be worse than Ings, past his best and also injury prone. Gold-plated sick note.
Isnât Wilson with Sullivanâs favourite agent? That seems to be more of a driver for Sullivanâs recruitment than what we need. I wonder why?!
Worst chairman in world. Potter is saying he doesnât want a striker because he doesnât want Sullivans rubbish. This is just a ploy Sullivan saying potter doesnât want one so he can justify signing his mates clients.
Sullivan needs to get out the club.
If potter really goes in with injury plagued fullkrug as our only recognised senior striker then he deserves all that is coming his way. It would appear he is determined to play as many defensively minded players as is humanly possible as he bores his way through the season, now thatâs something to look forward to đ¤Łđ¤Ł
I feel sorry for the season ticket holders that had to endure last season and have renewed ahead of another dismal bore fest at the soulless bowl.
Youâre missing the whole point. Sullivan is yet again forcing players on the manager. And look at the dross heâs trying to sign.
Yes we need a young striker as back up to Fullkrug. What we donât need is a Callum over the hill, over paid Wilson.
This is not down to Potter. This is all Sullivan.
Youâre absolutely right Ian, I got it completely wrong and allowed myself to be gaslit by the nonsense being peddled by the club. I can only apologise for being so naive and getting sucked in by the nonsense. This isnât on potter this is yet again on Sullivan. Cheers
If Wilson was offered to Potter surely this just tells us that Sullivan will never change his ways.
Brownhill has bought a house in Brentwood. IMO this means he will be announced near the back end of the transfer window.
I donât believe any manager / coach at West Ham has full control and power of veto. 2 words – Danny Ings.
Until Sullivan departs we will remain a circus!
How do you read this as rejection? Surely the quote says “We expect to sign Callum Wilson”. Doesn’t that mean…Potter has expressed an opinion the ‘spokesperson’ doesn’t agree with, and he’s going to sign him anyway?
Ratified by Ex this morning too.
This Club!
Hopefully the reason that Potter has apparently said that he doesnât want a striker is because Sullivan tried forcing Wilson on him.
Thereâs no doubt that we need one, but not if itâs Wilson.
