West Ham United v Chelsea – Graham Potter’s starting XI released

West Ham United’s first home game of a new season, under the lights, what’s not to love. For many seasons this would have represented another year starting with high hopes and optimism, several new players to admire and the sincere hope of pulling a fast one over our West London rivals. This fixture already has an air of desperation about West Ham’s predicament as Graham Potter struggles to shore up his fragile defence, immobile midfield and toothless attack.

Apart from that it is all perfect.

The Sunderland capitulation raises questions of selection for Potter to deal with: Stick with three at the back plus wingbacks or move to a 4-3 -2-1 selection once more.

The team selection for tonights clash has just been published and it is:

West Ham United:

Hermansen, |Wan Bissaka, Todibo, Kilman, Aguerd, Diouf | Soucek, Ward Prowse, Paquetá, | Fullkrug , Bowen |

Which means one change as Tomas Soucek is recalled in place of Guido Rodriguez. The bench shows Callum Marshall, back from suspension, in the senior squad for the first time in a Premier League fixture.

We’ll be back after the full time whistle with ‘Gonzo’s player ratings’ and my ‘final whistle-first impression’ articles assuming we can stay awake long enough and don’t disappear for an early night if the score his five zero. Which is certainly possible.

Come. On.You.Irons.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

In Spain watching match sky sat in bar. West Ham 1 Chelsea 5, 10 min to go. Abosulute disgrace, not even Chapionship standard. Painful to watch and Embarrassing, forecast Potter first Prem Manager to be sacked.
To embarrassed to admit what team I support.
In Spain working for Airbus, will now support Real Madrid, like my Spanish girlfriend family. Must go as moving to another Bar,.

So much for Potter’s faith in the Academy. This will be a disaster.

  • Dudley Tyler says:

So we’ve now decided that an attack with Bowen is ‘toothless’

    Potts FFS

Have I got this right, we are playing Chelsea without having a CDM on the pitch?

Alvarez is the best we have for this position and he is being shipped out.

Potts is next best for this position, having played all pre-season, but Potter has now given him a complete vote of no confidence.

Irving could maybe do it, but also has Potters no confidence vote.

And Rodriguez got a go last week and showed he’s inadequate.

We’ve had over 3 months to fix this since last season ended and we have no one new in.

I’ll watch through the gaps between my fingers…

    And hope.

  • Steveo says:

Pretty much what I expected. I can’t see what else potter can actually do .Soucek in my opinion is better than Rodriguez. I fear we will get out paced in midfield. The 3 at the back have got to be at it tonight

  • John Lattimore says:

    Your optimism is overwhelming Martin!
