West Ham 0 Chelsea 3 – Match Review

Oh, this is better, I thought, We’ve already had a shot on target after 1 minute. Kudus, on his right foot, hit one straight at the keeper. The optimism didn’t last long as West Ham’s central defence was split through after switching off from a free kick  and Jackson, unopposed, made it 0-1 after about 2 minutes.  Same again ten minutes later, Mavropanos jogging back and nobody getting in a tackle as a big space in the middle gave Jackson his 2nd. Why would you allow this one player so much freedom?

Were we playing three at the back with wing-backs? Wan Bissaka and Emerson were very advanced. Alvarez playing a kind of third centre back but still we looked totally disorganised. I’ll tell you what, Todibo must have crashed into Lopetegui’s car in the car park to blot his copy book and still sit on the bench with Mavropanos performing like he did. Awful start, gifting Chelsea two goals. What had West Ham been practising for the last week defensively?  Moving forward – we looked quite good – but gifting the opposition two goals is an impossible mountain to climb after 30 minutes.

Worse was to come when I was actually shouting at the screen when Summerville was pulled back in the ‘box but the referee ignored it and VAR claimed it was a ‘fleeting contact’ – what on earth does that mean? Clear on first viewing, clear on replays, Summerville was through and then pulled back. I don’t understand rules any more than the commentators I was listening to. ‘An absolute howler’ said both at half time.

Kudus’ disappointment as he was ruled offside

The sad thing was, after Chelsea two goals, moving forward we looked quite good. Summerville always looked a threat. Kudus scored but was about a foot offside. We were competing at last: Souckek on for Rodriguez who’d apparently had a knock. Half time – what was that planned formation? Three at the back with nobody in front of them by the look of things.

Second half and the game was over before 90 seconds had gone. Palmer running in from the left fired high into the ‘net as West Ham were outnumbered three to two on a break. Lopetegui’s face was as dark as the mood. This awful, porous defensive showing demands change at the back.

Antonio and Soler appeared at 52 minutes: Why did Summerville get taken off? The Crowd boo’ed loudly when he left. Shocking change, he’d looked full of threat and running. Alvarez was withdrawn too. Soler and Antonio appeared looking distinctly unenthusiastic.

In fairness Soler looked fairly fit on his first sprint forward. How on earth the players were supposed to work out ‘who was playing where’ after those three changes when they clearly didn’t know at the start. Seemed that Bowen was on the right, Kudus on the left, Antonio and everyone else piled through the middle and left so many spaces at the back that every time Chelsea came forward they looked like grabbing a fourth.

Andy Irving and Aaron Cresswell appeared sheepishly at 71 minutes, so the Scot finally gets to be a Premier League player at the expense of an ineffective Paquetá and Emerson. And at least Irving got a shot off within his first minute, straight at the keeper.

Areola made one superb point-blank save later on as Mavropanos stood 3 yards away from the attacker he was supposed to be marking: 75 minutes and the home fans were leaving. Wish I could. We seemed to be finishing the game with a team running around like a disorganised kids team with nobody knowing what they were doing. I’m a big Lopetegui supporter but even I couldn’t see what on earth this was all about.

The boo’s rang out after the final whistle and West Ham have lost their first three home games.

Absolute ****, very poor indeed, looked like a Sunday pub team!

  • John Ayris says:

It’s all far too porous, be as open as that and you lose every week.

Good players but not playing as a team, it needs to change and soon.

  • Phil Baker says:

Prior to Lopetegui’s appointment as Westham Manager , many fans said NOpetegui and now it’s GOpetegui after several games playing with a pub team defense . Southampton and Ipswich are likely relegation candidates with Westham now looking like the third team to take the drop .

With Bowen being pushed into the centre forward role it seems that Wan-Bissaka was pushed up into Jarrod Bowen’s right wing position, leaving a big hole at right back. Alvarez wasn’t doing a good job as a kind of centre back either. I really couldn’t understand just what we were playing at. Does Loppy know?

Summerville was looking good so it was a surprise Loppy took him off. Kudus worked hard as usual and Bowen tried his best. Even Andy Irwin didn’t look too bad when he came on. But Loppy seemed desperate with his changes and none of the players really seemed to know what was going on.

I hope Loppy can work out what he wants his players to do before much longer because the way Chelsea thrashed us without even trying hard is very depressing. We still look like an easy team to beat, even after spending so much money.

WELL DONE J LO , GOT HIS FIRST RECORD

Pathetic spent 150 million and looked like they had never played together. Schoolboy defending and how many times did we see 4 against 2 at the back and no-one organising any defensive line. Miles between back 4 and midfield and one ball down the channels left us completely exposed and lucky to lose by only 3. Taking off Summerville for Antonio was a complete joke, what must that do for his confidence when Antonio has not had a single shot on target in 5 games and should be nowhere near first team. Thousands of fans leaving early and booed off patience is running out fast for the new manager.

Look on the positive side, we haven’t lost away yet!

That was a depressing experience. Lack of surprise, lack of ideas, whereas Chelsea made it all look so simple. Plus whereas Sanchez was excellent, Areola had a poor day (except for that second half great save). Lopetegui’s ideas seem to be a mistery to the players on the pitch. Next, same suffering to continue against Liverpool on Wednesday?

    • Hammeroo says:

“Lopetegui’s ideas seem to be a mistery to the players”. Is that “mystery’ or “misery”? Either way I would agree with you!

  • Jay says:

This is extremely disappointing and extremely worrying. A team incapable of defending their goal. In the first half, the gap between Rodriguez and Alvarez and Paqueta was unacceptable. The space it left for Chelsea’s midfield to dominate in the centre of the park and slice us open. And where is the pace in the midfield and defence? Players chasing back after fleet footed attackers like they are wearing lead boots. I’m all for giving the project time, but this doesn’t bode well at all.

We all wanted the “West Ham Way”; today, we got it. Over the best part of a century I have seen this sort of a performance from West Ham all too often. What is it about West Ham that “top notch” managers & expensive signings can’t put right ? This team, like many a West Ham team before it, has NO defence. It wasn’t too bad up front, but we had no coherent defence ! If you have no defence, you cannot win games. It IS early days, but there seems very little to work with, despite the money spent. And, where are we going to get a defence (Bissaka excepted) for the rest of the season ? I predicted, in these columns, before the match, 2-4. That was because Chelsea are a top team & our defence is brittle. I wasn’t far wrong. If I can see it, surely an alleged top manager can !

  • Martin61 says:

Early days yet, we have the players and time to put it all right …….but wow, is there a lot to put right. Poor defensively, midfield over run and not operating smoothly at all, and we do not look like scoring.
Today, Summerville looked good, linked very well with Emerson and Somerset looks a player and should be on from the start.
After that, it was different degrees of poor for every player.
    Tobido should replace Dino now.
Obi Wan needs to focus on defending, he’s good at that but for whatever reason seems to be wandering all over the place today.
Kilman looked lost, probably as he was lacking cover from our 2 man midfield of Rodriguez and Paqueta.
Playing a back 5 was ridiculous. Alvarez, Somerset and possibly Paqueta in midfield (Paqueta is not himself ATM imo).
Upfront get Fullkrug in as soon as he is fit, Summerville on the left and I would go for Kudus as Bowen is off form(tired from Euros/struggling with captaincy. That said, Kudus isn’t exactly tearing trees up!

  • JK says:

2 golas caused by Alvarez bad positional selections and inability to accelerate with Jackson costed us the game. I hope this guy is nowhere close to the 1st team. Souček might be slow but his his position selection is excellent compared to Alvarez.

    Bring back Bilić!!!!!!!!!

  • Martin storrie says:

Another goa he scorl for Duran today, boy did we teach Villa a lesson not buying him, he has scored as many as us as a team

  • John Ayris says:

But our home games have been against three of the top four is not insignificant…

  • kcockayne says:

True. But we lost them all – badly. Things do not look good.
