Newcastle United have a trophy drought. One that Makes West Ham’s pre-Europa Conference League victory 43 year wait seem insignificant! The Magpies, in fact, didn’t win a trophy in seventy years. The perennial bridesmaids but never the bride, Newcastle have an astonishing SIX ‘runner-up’ awards having lost two FA cup finals and come second in the Premier League in the nineties, famously under Kevin Keegan twice. They also lost two Wembley finals in the seventies.

So it would be fair to say they have Sunday’s League Cup final firmly on their mind – but have to come to London just six days before and take on pesky West Ham United.

And what’s more, they have a major injury worry to deal with: Striker Alexander Isak limped off against Brighton in Newcastle’s FA Cup loss, having missed the previous game against Liverpool with a groin injury.

Given the magnitude of Newcastle’s trophy drought, will Howe risk his main man at West Ham just six days before the Wembley showpiece? Opinions vary but should Isak suffer any recurrence of his injury then he’ll have no time for recovery. Maybe then time to ‘unleash’ West Ham’s nemesis Callum Wilson and rest Isak on Monday night.

Far be it for anyone to write Callum Wilson off as his record against West Ham speaks for itself: If you ask the three Hammers’ defenders who they’d rather face on Monday night, their answer would undoubtedly be the elder statesman of Toon, Wilson.

Which would be a boost to the Hammers chances of pulling off a third straight Premier League win: Isak at his best would be far more of a threat.

Newcastle fan site geordiebootboys.com suggests :“Eddie Howe must put out his strongest Newcastle United XI against West Ham United, despite the looming Carabao Cup final.”

It’ll be a brave call either way. Newcastle in sixth spot in th ePremier League must have Champions League qualification on their agenda but that lure of silverware could tempt Howe to keep his best player safely wrapped up for the big event.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.
