The Hammers have been negotiating on and off for some weeks over the possible acquisition of either Kyle Walker-Peters or Aaron Wan-Bissaka. This saga when linked with the earlier negotiations between West Ham and Southampton over the Flynn Downes transfer has had more twists and turns than a snake’s sleeping bag.
It does appear that a decision concerning the KWP/AWB conundrum has been made. We’ve been aware of rumours and speculation that Manchester United’s capture of Noussair Mazraoui has forced them into a compromise in order to ship out Wan-Bissaka – a prerequisite for their Mazraoui deal going ahead.
At the same time this afternoon it has been reported as an ‘exclusive’ by footballinsider that West Ham United have pulled the plug and walked away from negotiations over Kyle Walker Peters, collapsing any chance of the transfer of the Southampton player going ahead.
Join the dots and it seems pretty likely that the rumours we’d heard whispered are true – in which case there could well be an announcement in the next 24 hours to confirm what one or two rogue twitter accounts have already stated. Manchester United and West Ham are both invested in finding mutually acceptable terms for the sale of Wan-Bissaka to The Irons – and what a great upgrade on Vlad Coufal he will prove to be if our expectations are correct.
We shan’t proclaim a deal done just yet, as we reported last week, Wan Bissaka had apparently turned down a move to East London. Manchester Utd’s lower price expectations would allow West Ham to make the package more competitive. ‘Deal or no deal’ ? I’m sticking my neck out and saying 90% on this one.
Time will tell but my opinion right now is that Wan Bissaka immediately improves our starting line up. I like Coufal. Was a revelation when he first joined (like Soucek), but I think both players will now struggle for game time under a new coach.
The only sure thing with West ham is that NOTHING is a sure thing until it turns up in the London Stadium dressing room wearing a West Ham shirt. Romano & Sheth don’t have a clue and the rest of us certainly don’t. My only wish is that I could spend the summer transfer window on a desert island with West Hams specialty, zero communication.
You can avoid all of this speculation. Don’t look! I feel that way too but still keep looking and hoping 😉
Kyle WALKER -PETERS is an absolutely fantastic right back, proven in Premier League and England international. Easily worth £20 mil.
I think Southampton do not want to sell and want him to sign new contract.
Downes proven in Championship, did not make it for West Ham in Premier League, sold for £18 mil. So KWP worth less ???
I think West Ham will regret not signing KWP. He is not being given away despite contract situation but still worth £20 mil and far far, better player and be cheaper contract than Wan Bissaka,
Not sure what is stopping this deal ?,it is no brainer
Walker Peters is worth less yes. He only has a year left on his contract whereas Downes had four years. Buying out the contract is a big part of the price of a player, the more contract to buy out the more is paid.
Wan Bissaka is the same, only a year left, the talk is £10M to £15M for him.
Thanks for the insight in respect of how a player’s valuation is calculated Mr Ayris, that’s very much appreciated.
Totally agree with the positive comments on Vlad, he was outstanding going forward last season and had more assists as a full back than anyone else in the PL except Porro. AWB is good defensively but nowhere near as good in an attacking sense !!
Must have missed most of those, do not remember it being a particularly memorable season for Coufal
Trouble is Kyle Walker-Peters is by far the best of those players ….
Yeah, let’s make a pointless bid for him 🙂
I love Coufal but AWB is a big upgrade, god knows what the two above have been watching.
He may be an upgrade defensively but Vlad is better going forward. Loppy like attacking full backs. What have you been watching?
Mmm Coufal didn’t exactly shine in the final third last year did he, definitely on the decline for me

7 assists from right back 🤔
If AWB is sold by United I got one will be gutted ! He’s definitely the best defensive right back in Europe bar none. As a one on one probably best in the world ! It would be madness not to keep him unless someone was stupid enough to pay fortunes you’d never get another player as good for less money !
I don’t think he’ll be an improvement on Coufal at all as they are totally different players, what I do think is that he will give us a better option in those games where we set up more defensively, usually away games. When we are at home and should be attacking and dominating, use Coufal to get us up the pitch. Defensively though AWB is one of the best in the business. Hope this actually goes through.
Agreed. That’s a gross insult to Vlad. It remains to be seen if he will be an upgrade let alone a great upgrade. But having two good options at RB cannot be a bad thing.
He is a better player than Coufal, who is now the wrong side of 30. Not as good an attacker as defender but I would certainly start him over Coufal in general.
