French defender Maxime Esteve could be offered a Premier League lifeline by West Ham United, according to L’Equipe. The 22-year-old centre-back finds himself in a curious situation after joining Burnley from Montpellier in January for a cool €12 million (£10 million).

Despite showcasing some talent, Esteve was unable to prevent Burnley’s slide into the Championship, winning a mere two of his 16 appearances. However, West Ham, under new manager Julen Lopetegui, are seemingly looking past that and see potential in the young defender.

Esteve’s signing would represent a desire to reshape the Hammers’ defense, a department Lopetegui appears keen to address. The Frenchman’s recent experience in the Premier League, albeit with a struggling Burnley side, makes him an interesting prospect.

Competition for Esteve’s signature is emerging, with Everton also expressing interest in the France U23 international. However, the Toffees’ financial woes could give West Ham a significant advantage in the race to acquire him.

Reports suggest the Hammers have already taken the initiative, opening talks with Burnley to secure Esteve. Whether Esteve can translate his flashes of promise into consistent performances for a team with European aspirations remains to be seen. But one thing’s for sure, West Ham are determined to bolster their backline, and Esteve could be a part of that solution.
