West Ham United have won the UEFA Europa Conference League!
After 15 matches and 293 days, it is all over and we are the winners of our first major trophy in 43 years and just the fifth in our 128-year history!
Jarrod Bowen was our match-winner and it was his his name being sung by the Claret and Blue Army, Bowen, his coaches and teammates.
Not the greatest of games, but who cares…. When the final whistle went there was the most almighty roar from the Hammers supporters . Our trophy drought is over!
The first half was not a classic, but as the whistle went we were still in it
We simply didn’t play well as an attacking force. We completed 96 passes and only attempted 125. We had three goal attempts, one on target, and two corners.
Fiorentina had over 68% possession, but did not seriously trouble Areola other than the ‘goal’ they had disallowed just before half-time, when Kouamé’s header hit the post before Jovic saw his follow-up header ruled out for offside.
On the hour though,Bowen controlled a long throw on the chest, and the ball then hit the outstretched fist of Biraghi. PENALTY !
Benrahma took a terrific penalty, sidefooted high to his right. Terracciano went the wrong way.
But this is West Ham, we never make things easy for us and just ten minutes later, a long crossfield pass was headed back by Gonzalez to Bonaventura, on the edge of the area. He controlled the ball on the stretch with his left foot and cracked an early right-footed that bounced across Areola and into the corner.
But cometh the hour, cometh the man. In the last minute of the game, Paqueta threaded the ball through for Bowen, who timed his run perfectly, holds off Igor with his pace and shoots low past the goalkeeper with his left foot.
The claret and blue army erupted and then nearly eight nail biting minutes later, the whistle went and the players and fans went berserk, We were even treated to the sight of David Moyes dancing!
Europa League, here we come !
