West Ham loanee George Earthy earned yet another Man of the Match award as Bristol City beat West Bromwich Albion to move into fifth place in the Championship.
The 2–1 win, engineered by former Hammers coach and current City boss Liam Manning, keeps the promotion chasers firmly in the play-off spots — and Earthy once again played a pivotal role. That’s back-to-back Man of the Match performances for the West Ham academy graduate, who is really beginning to come of age.
Earthy was unlucky not to score, with a clever step-over and neat shot narrowly skimming the post. But it was his constant probing, intelligent passing, and relentless energy that helped drive the home side to a dramatic late victory.
City went ahead through a clinical finish from Nahki Wells, but a mix-up reminiscent of Alphonse Areola on a bad day saw goalkeeper Max O’Leary gift the Baggies an equaliser. A worse error was yet to come — in injury time, Haydon Roberts embarrassed the West Brom keeper with a weak effort that somehow squeezed through the stopper’s legs. A poor night for goalkeeping all around.
Earthy played the full 90 minutes and reports from Ashton Gate continue to grow more positive. When asked about Earthy’s future, City boss Manning remained tight-lipped, telling reporters: “We’ll have to wait and see.”
Given his deployment in attacking midfield and the consistent quality of his performances, I can certainly see Earthy getting a chance in pre-season under West Ham manager Graham Potter.
Perhaps city ought to consider buying him
I sympathise with Gonzo as not much to shout about at the moment, so getting a bit carried away is understandable to be honest, lol. Good luck to young George but a long way to go before we can judge him in any form.
Mind you “Energy” yes, I remember a few years ago some West Ham players having that !
As a Bristol City supporter I’d love to see George Earthy return for a 2nd season loan but don’t expect it. He’s been superb for us, especially in the last few games. He is bright, seems to have a clear picture in his head when he receives the ball, is energetic and has a wonderful attitude. He is a typical West Ham midfielder in their inevitable mould with a stature not unlike Mark Noble. If he goes on to have a career as good as he had, and I see no reason why he shouldn’t, he could be justifiably proud. The only thing he seemingly lacks at present is sustainable pace (although he will run all day) but it’s early days. West Ham have a, gem on their hands.
Stop saying wonderkid you cock!
You do enjoy putting pressure on young players don’t you? George is starting to get more game time now and is gaining confidence and affecting matches, but I and many others believe he could do with another year in the Championship before coming home
Wonderkid? He’s 20. 32 games, 2 goals, 1 assist. Don’t get carried away.
You do understand certain players peak at a certain age . anyone who watched harry kane in his loan spells at orient Millwall Leicester city and Norwich would have laughed themselves silly. If told then what he was going to become .
