West Ham’s 218-day disaster – just the latest symptom of a lesson not yet learned

West Ham United’s struggles with injury-prone signings makes for grim reading, with German striker Niclas Fullkrug now surely qualifying to join Hammers club’ folklore as one of the infamous litany of “sick-list signings”.

Since arriving in 2024, Fullkrug has endured a torrid spell on the sidelines, missing 218 days through injury and sitting out 32 matches. His frustration has reportedly led him to instruct his agents, ROOF, to seek out a new club despite only being at the London Stadium for a year and a half.

Fullkrug’s situation is far from unique. West Ham has a history of high-profile players whose careers at the club were blighted by lengthy absences:

Jack Wilshere who spent two years at West Ham, most in the injury room, amassing a total of 462 days injured and played 16 games before retiring from football in 2022.
Kieran Dyer joined West Ham in 2007 and left in 2011 having been crocked for a total of 440 days, and only played 30 games for the Hammers.
Yet it is Andy Carroll who tops the chart having spent seven year at the club, initially joining on loan in 2012 from Liverpool and has a record of 1,173 days missing 162 games

For many supporters, Fullkrug’s plight feels like déjà vu. The club’s recruitment has often been overshadowed by players whose potential was undone by persistent injuries. While Carroll remains the most extreme example, the addition of Fullkrug to this list highlights a recurring issue that has haunted West Ham for over a decade.

With Fullkrug now seeking a fresh start elsewhere, the Hammers face yet another reminder of how costly injuries can be—not just in terms of finances, but in lost opportunities on the pitch. Perhaps, this time around, finally, the lesson will sink in. Injuries are part of football – but the deck and be stacked against a side which persists with bringing in over thirty-something players with injury history and high mileage legs.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.

Steidten is to blame for this. Like most of the other trash we bought that season. I was a TS fan at the time but come to realise that IMO he was a complete fraud

Shocking beyond belief, Matt – just illustrates the incompetence of Sullivan, Brady & the rest of the buffoons who pose as our board. Club will never move forward until we are rid – unfortunately, I don’t see us surviving this season, pray I’m wrong 😩
