West Ham’s Aldi Manager Hunt Highlights Buy Cheap, Buy Twice Philosophy

As the old saying goes, “buy cheap, buy twice,” and in West Ham’s case, it seems that’s precisely what we are about to do.

Whether Julen Lopetegui survives his must-win shootout against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night, it’s fair to assume he will not complete his two-year Hammers contract.

With some players bordering on mutiny and having lost the faith of most of the fanbase, Lopetegui faces a huge uphill battle. The club are openly looking at candidates to replace the Spaniard, and even if he does win ‘El Sackio’ against Gary O’Neil, challenges against Bournemouth, Brighton, and Liverpool await.

Therefore, it’s reasonably safe to assume the Hammers will soon be searching for a replacement, but it would seem expectations are already being managed. Most ITKs and football insiders suggest that West Ham have no money, so they can only hire an out-of-work manager.

This is the perfect example of the “buy cheap, buy twice” philosophy, which will see the Hammers spend more on sacking and re-hiring a Lopetegui replacement than they would have by paying a compensation package for the right appointment in the first place.

I’m quite certain that Marco Silva or Andoni Iraola would transform our fortunes quickly and have us climbing the Premier League, but they would cost upwards of £5m in compensation—which means we won’t do it.

It’s a bizarre trend at West Ham, where we recklessly spend money on unproven players in the transfer market yet value managerial appointments so much lower. The Hammers are a paradoxical football club, buying footballers from Harrods while picking managers from the reduced shelf in Aldi.

Funny how it keeps failing.

Sullivan in particular has ruined the club. He has literally stripped the club of everything and nothing is ever changing whilst he owns the club.

Dear Mister Kretinsky .. the present Chairman of West Ham United is (I think we all agree now) a pathetic, little Napolean, who (although he may claim opposite) knows absolutely nothing about football, and is quickly damaging your precious investment to a point of worthlessness. By refusing to admit he is ever wrong and attempting to save and always scrimp money and not spend on absolute essentials such as a quality manager, or a high quality striker – he is running our beloved club into the ground, and actually wastes far more money to recover the damage. The fans have known the reckless irresponsibility and deceit of Mister Sullivan and his cohort Brady for a long, long time. We were warned in advance by Birmingham supporters, but were helpess to stop him buying the club. Please don’t assume his present wealth has been acquired honourably through business acuman, he is just a shameless porn and property developer, who got lucky during the boom years of the 1980s. He has no morals and no care for the supporters, or for the great history of West Ham United. We, The Fans, beseech you now to do your very best to remove Mister Sullivan from all control of our club and take over. He is not a fit and responsible owner. Please, we advise you do this quickly, not for us, but for the sake of your own investment.

I have always thought that west ham are “penny wise and pound foolish”

So true, only one person to blame

  • Martin storrie says:

Who are the players we buy from Harrods ????, when did we last buy a worth while striker, & you need cover in every position in the squad. Who ever made the decision on Duran is the one who should walk

  • Rob says:

It’s because Sulivan thinks he’s right all the time.

Surely £5m is a snip for the right guy.

It costs far more to get the wrong guy then **** £50m up the wall on Fulkrug and Guilherme!!

      • Matt says:

Totally agree, pay £5m for a decent coach and we could finish above Spurs!

Only 5 points above us …… COYI ⚒️♥️🩵

  • Mick Bering says:

Agree with your article 100 percent But that’s the W Ham way under Sullivan I’ve watched us play for over 60 years and imn convinced Graham Potter is our answer to all this

  • Annette Markham says:

I think it would be better to Sack SNIDEn and give Moyes Director of Sport job An X manager that knows what a team needs as apposed to Steindten pulling names from a hat that clearly do not want to be there

    • Steve says:

Been attending for over 60 years , but afraid can’t have Moyes back in any capacity !

    • Brentwood ⚒️ says:

Moyes can stay on BBC Match of the Day giving his “expert analysis” on defending 🤣🤣🤣

    • Matt says:

Moyes in charge of recruitment?! That didn’t work out too well did it.

Signed Hugill for £10m and then missed out on Viktor Gyökeres for £17m.

  • John Ayris says:

What can be added, you’ve said it nigh on perfectly.

Surely the quality of the manager makes more difference to both success and profitability than any single player does. Yet we’ll spend fortunes on a player but nought on a manager.

Is it that players amortise on the books so the value writes off over the period of their contract but managers do not ? I don’t know the answer to that I’m speculating. Whatever it doesn’t seem to stop other clubs.

Buy cheap buy twice certainly seems to be what we’re in the process of doing right now. We don’t even seem to be doing that sensibly, it’s like a nightmare at the moment.

    • Mark says:

What exactly was Tim employed for?

Brady, Sullivan, Noble, agents are not qualified to make coach / player recruitment decisions.

      • John Ayris says:

I’d say that he was employed after Kretinski bought in so as to put some curb on Sullivan deciding on buying whatever players he likes the look of.

Sullivan runs a live and kicking Subbuteo team, it’s an ego trip as well as investment to him. Whereas Kretinski seemingly takes very little personal interest so needs people like Steidten and to appoint representatives to the board.

People go on and on about Sullivan being the root of all evil, I don’t think he’s that but do think that he leaves a lot to be desired. If I were Kretinski I’d want a Steidten and my representatives on the board too.

        • Matt says:

I genuinely believe that is why Sullivan keeps appointing coaches he knows won’t with Tim.

Kretinsky made a wise decision to curb the power of Sullivan wasting 100’s millions on signings.

Sullivan was probably hoping Tim would walk, the same way we hope the same of JLo, Sullivan and Brady.
