In January 2023, West Ham signed Brazilian defender Luizao from São Paulo on a three-and-a-half-year contract. The Hammers acquired him on a free transfer, as his contract with São Paulo had expired. The 6’2″ central defender had made 20 first-team appearances in Brazil and had played alongside veteran defender Miranda, who had spent eight years at Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan.
Upon joining West Ham, Luizao was considered a promising prospect for the future and was integrated into the development squad.
After five years of development at the São Paulo Academy, which has produced talents like Kaká and Ederson, the 22-year-old has yet to make his first-team debut, let alone feature in any of the club’s recent friendlies.
Luizao has demonstrated versatility, being able to play as a left-back as well, and is described as quick, tall, and physical. It is surprising that, under new management, he has not been given a chance to showcase his abilities.
Given the possibility that Aguerd, Zouma, or both may not be at the London Stadium in four weeks’ time, it seems odd that Luizao hasn’t been considered, unless he is deemed not good enough.
Earlier this year, reports indicated that several Brazilian clubs and Serie A giants Lazio were monitoring his situation. West Ham reportedly placed a £4 million valuation on him, suggesting that the club sees some potential in the player.
It will be interesting to see what unfolds over the next few weeks, but the lack of playing time indicates he may move on elsewhere.
He could be the needed left back as.backup to Emerson.
Only other available is Cresswell. With his speed (nil) and age, 20 mins of bench would be max.
Any other signing for this position appears non existent.
Bring Dawson from wolves and this guy
Sorry Dawson has gone for good!!!
What can you buy for £4m?
He’s another Brazilian that Tim doesn’t have to negotiate for and could turn out to be a winner.
Moyes never gave him a chance. Surprise, surprise.
The Moyes blueprint strikes again.
Why have a player in the team, and we don’t use him or forget about him.
It’s west ham remember
