West Ham’s ghost defenders | On the payroll, not the team sheet

With Jean-Clair Todibo currently injured, and Max Kilman and Dinos Mavropanos the only other two recognised first team centre halves, it’s been reported that it’s unlikely West Ham will dip into the transfer kitty, given limited funds and the need for a striker and possibly another central midfielder. Bizarrely, West Ham surprisingly do however have three more central defenders on their books, but are not in a position to play any of them!?

Kurt Zouma is in the final year of his contract and currently on loan to Saudi club, Al Orobah FC, with West Ham paying the majority of his wages, said to be in the region of £2.2m. Now aged 30, he has played 8 games for the Saudi team. His career has been riddled with injuries, and arguably in his last season at West Ham it was all to apparent he could not continue to play in the Premier league, week in, week out.

Nayef Aguerd, similarly is on loan to Real Sociedad in Spain, with the Hammers paying a large proportion of his wages, yet received a £2m loan fee. The Moroccan international has no break clause in his loan, and has been an ever present in La Liga earning rave reviews.

Lastly, Brazilian prospect, Luizao, aged 22, who has been selected regularly for the Academy Under-21s, was not even registered for the squad at the beginning of the season, even though there were places available.

West Ham under Lopetegui were open to selling the player permanently or loan to buy deal. There has been suggested interest from Brazilian teams, yet as of today no deal has been finalised, and Potter will want to evaluate the player, before allowing him to leave.

Kaelan Casey, is an option available to Graham Potter, and the England U-20 star has been included in a number of match day squads.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.

My Granparents asked my Dad what team me and my brother supported so they could buy us football shirts for Christmas. Luizao had Bobby Moore. I chose West Ham. Two years later we won the FA cup and then win it again five years after that. I thought we’d win a trophy every few years. Little did I know. My brother chose Manchester United. My grandparents bought him a Manchester City shirt by mistake. So he became a city supporter long before they became the team they are today. Lucky bugger.

West Ham had Bobby Moore not Luizao. I was going to say something about Luizao but couldn’t be bothered.

I was born in West Ham Lane on Bobby Moore’s birthday.

No options for me, I’m afraid, but I wouldn’t change a thing.

In 1963, a little kid made a choice that has stuck with him for life. He decided he was a West Ham United supporter. Between then and now there have been countless times when he has questioned that decision, but despite multiple occasions stating “I am never going to watch them again” he still does. No matter what, even this current ongoing pantomime, he just cannot change that decision. I cannot think of any other decision I have made in life that was so irrational and devoid of common sense.

I was born into & have suffered for 60 years & if I’ve had to suffer it then it’s only fair that my children have had too as well. Suffered it but absolutely no regrets, were a special bunch. COYI ⚒⚒⚒
