West Ham’s Musical Chairs Transfer Plan

West Ham’s reported transfer priorities seem to change so quickly that it’s sometimes hard to keep up.

Today, it seems like signing a new goalkeeper is flavour of the month, while at the start of the window, a striker was supposed to be top of the list. Whilst the club have been chasing a keeper since June, there does seem to be the usual reactionary response to yesterdays Man U Friendly which has apparently seen another priority switch.

The fact remains: the Hammers still need a striker, at least one athletic midfielder, and a goalkeeper. That could change again if Lucas Paquetá departs, in which case an additional playmaker will be needed—but one would hope West Ham are chasing all three positions with equal urgency.

Of course, you could make the case that another central defender with a bit of pace would be the cherry on top—but clearly, funds will be limited unless Dinos or Aguerd are sold.

While Alphonse Areola’s calamitous display grabbed the headlines in West Ham’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Manchester United, the lack of striking depth was also exposed.

Early signs suggest Jarrod Bowen may play more centrally this season, and the club could do with cover for both him and Füllkrug (and no, I’m not talking about Callum Wilson).

But all this talk of “top transfer priorities” is a bit concerning. The squad still has massive gaps—and we’re at least three first-team quality players short.

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender 😬⚒️ Irons

I started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

I give West Ham opinions and interviews on Sky Sports News and even did a bit of moonlighting on BBC Football Focus. Former video and content creator for West Ham United back in the days of Upton Park. I was lucky enough to feature in the documentary broadcast on that final wonderful game at the Boleyn when Winston Reid broke Manchester United hearts.

I frequently feature on BBC Radio 5 Live and once ate a biscuit in Tony Gales shed.

Connoisseur of salted caramel doughnuts and I love a Sloppy Giuseppe pizza although I'm slightly suspicious where the name came from.

When I'm not moaning about West Ham I can be found walking a dog that looks like a sheep and tinkering with pinball machines.

I think your analysis is spot on Gonzo. I’ve personally always felt that we can’t solve all our problems in one transfer windows but these issues affect the spine of the team and will make us vulnerable until we sort them. I am heartened that Potter seems to at least understand what type of signings are required, don’t believe that he doesn’t wanta striker, he just doesn’t want another dodgy sticking plaster.

As you say, Gonzo, the Priorities are all over the pitch !
Very worrying times and hard to feel any positivity with the new season around the corner !

Why on earth get rid of a great clubman and keeper like Fabianski and in such an undignified manner. He should have given him a years extension.
The midfield should have and is the priority to get at least 2 players in there but with a decent amount of the window we might be left with scraps

  • Julian Woodhouse says:

Agree Gonzo, and seemingly no recruitment plan of substance to rely on those gaps being filled. Very concerning as we are currently weaker than last year with the same issues.

I can hear the Muppet Show music in my head as I read the stories of idiocy in the ongoing Westham saga .

Not really whu have never had a concise plan of who his needed.
It’s a bit like pin the tail on the donkey, shut your eyes and hope for the best.
That’s why they are associated with so many players each transfer period.

All true and another symptom of a really amateur approach to the transfer window.
The lack of funding without sales and telling the world so driving down prices .
The dishonesty about funds being available without sales.
The failure to back the new DoF who seems to be wasting his time.
Having committed the folly of selling Kudus at a knockdown price to Tottenham we have still only made two signings and one a ‘free’ so more than half of the money not invested in the team.
It’s all scattergun, amateur and clueless. No defined targets just seeing who sells and who is still available to get with as little of that money as possible.
Callum Wilson really sums it up if he comes.
