West Ham’s Performance in International Competitions

With sports betting sites constantly updating their Champions League betting odds, many The Hammers fans wonder about the team’s performance in European tournaments. West Ham’s international track record isn’t the best in England, but there are still some noteworthy feats, which we’ll cover today.

Unless you’re a diehard fan, you probably didn’t know there’s more to The Irons besides the Premier League or the FA Cup. West Ham has competed in some of the most competitive European competitions, such as the Europa League and the UEFA Cup. Keep reading to learn how far The Hammers went.

UEFA Europa League

The Hammers only played in the Europa League once, in the 21/22 season. The team exceeded all expectations, reaching the semi-finals but losing against Eintracht Frankfurt (3-1 agg.). West Ham eliminated teams like Lyon and Sevilla.

West Ham also entered the qualifiers for the 15/16 and the 16/17 seasons. In the 15/16 season, it reached the third qualifying round, losing versus Astra Giurgiu (4-3 agg.). The next year, The Hammers played against Astra Giurgiu in the last qualifying round but lost again (2-1 agg.).

UEFA Conference League

West Ham qualified for the 22/23 UEFA Conference League after beating Viborg FF by 3-1 and 3-0. The Hammers still have a chance of winning a spot in the final, provided they beat AZ Alkmaar. At the time of writing, West Ham’s win odds were 1.67, a clear difference compared to AZ Alkmaar’s odds of 5.70.

UEFA Cup

Until 2009, before it was rebranded as the Europa League, the second-highest tier in European competitions was the UEFA Cup. West Ham entered the competition twice, in the 99/00 and the 06/07 seasons.

In the 99/00 season, The Irons made it to the second round, where they faced Steaua Bucharest. The first leg occurred in Romania, ending in a 2-0 loss for West Ham. Steaua secured a draw at the London Stadium in the second leg, moving the Romanian team forward.

West Ham didn’t go as far in the 06/07 season, only reaching the first round of the competition, where it lost against Palermo in the home and away legs. The aggregate score for Palermo was 4-0.

UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup

The UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup was a European competition until 1999, when it was merged to create the UEFA Cup. It was disputed annually by the winners of each domestic cup. West Ham played in the cup in the 64/65, 65/66, 75/76, and 80/81 seasons.

The Hammers won the first time they entered the competition, beating 1860 Munich by 2-0. The following year, the team reached the semi-finals but lost against Borussia Dortmund (5-2 agg.).

In 75/76, West Ham failed to achieve the title by losing 4-2 versus Anderlecht in the final. In 80/81, it got to the quarter-finals, losing against Dinamo Tbilisi (4-2 agg.).
