West Ham’s performance against Arsenal at the weekend has attracted plaudits from across the fan base, club sites such as Claret and Hugh – but also much further afield.

Roshane Thomas writing in the nytimes.com has singled out one West Ham star who he feels is bound for England selection, claiming it to to be ‘inevitable’.

Not written about Aaron Wan-Bissaka, he of the telescopic leg tackles and incredible mazy wing-back lung-bursting runs. Although Wan Bissaka’s claim to the England right back sir is strong. Nor is it written about Jarrod Bowen who surely must feature in Tuchel’s immediate plans, with Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka sidelined.

Thomas wrote:“At left-back for West Ham, Ollie Scarles showed why senior England recognition feels inevitable. The 19-year-old full-back, a young version of Aaron Cresswell, has amassed seven caps from under-16 to under-18 level. On a day when Arsenal’s 18-year-old full-back Myles Lewis-Skelly, also pushing for an England call-up, received a red card, Scarles continued to play with the maturity of an experienced professional.”

Which might be a little previous, even though I say it – Scarles still feeling his way into the West Ham side and competing with Emerson Palmieri for the starting berth is still learning his trade and could do with a year being the first pick at London Stadium before piling even more pressure onto his young shoulders.

But clearly, he is an exceptional talent who, remember, couldn’t even get into the starting eleven under Potter’s predecessor. Fabulous to see another academy product doing so well and getting the cheers from the away fans on Saturday.

The sky’s the limit for Scarles and the really exciting thing is that he is the first of many now pushing for inclusion into the first team squad. Further progress under the youth-friendly Potter regime suddenly seems likely and then – that England call up can be celebrated by West Ham fans – why not all three next year though, Wan Bissaka, Bowen and Scarles? Now there’s a thought.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

AWB best buy, Rice best sale. Scarles and some of the other young hammers will revitalise WHU.
    Go Potter!!!!

There was a game round about 2007, maybe a friendly against Spain that had Ferdinand, Carrick, Lampard, Cole and Defoe, all West Ham academy players , all playing for England at the same time.

Agree with Kip I wanted AWB last season. No wide players like taking him on down the line, he can carry the ball with pace absolute bargain.Ten Haag didn’t fancy him why I don’t know.As for Scarles since he made his debut I wanted him in.Emerson for me is average defensively switching off to often. Olly will make a mistake as he is young but he will learn from it. He done well against Arsenal very good prospect

I said if from the beginning..awb was an absolute bargain…top top.player …just needed change of scenery….other players out of form for long periods , should take note….this is why I thought rashford would be a good signing for us

Last time we had 3 England players was probably 1966. Didn’t we win something that season?

Rob Green, Matthew Upson and Carlton Cole vs Spain and Slovenia in 2009 and again against Egypt in 2010.

David James, Joe Cole and Trevor Sinclair against Italy, South Korea, Cameroon and Portugal in 2002 as well.

I will paraphrase Bill Shankleys words when he was talking about Scottish players.
“ Any great team needs 3 West Ham players. Any more than that and you are in trouble “ 😃

  • Ray says:

Three West Ham players in the England team? Alf Garnett would see that as a sign.
